News and Notes This Weekend's Action Utah soccer (7-2-3, 0-2-1) continues on its three-week road swing through the Pac-12 with trips to Oregon (5-4-2, 1-1-1) and Oregon State (0-9-3, 0-3-0) this weekend. The Utes and Ducks meet on Friday at 4 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Networks while the game against the Beavers will be played on Sunday at noon.
Best Start Ever With no losses in their first 10 matches, the Utes got off to the best start in their program's history. The best record for any Ute team was the 2003 squad that went 16-2-2 en route to an undefeated Mountain West Conference title and a NCAA Tournament berth.
Luke Named Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week … Again Utah soccer goalkeeper
Lindsey Luke was named the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week for Sept. 22-28. This was the second-straight weekly award for the junior and gave her a record five conference honors for her career.
Luke made six saves as the Utes drew with No. 4 Stanford. Despite not keeping the clean sheet, she has six shutouts this season and 19 for her career.
The NSCAA All-Region selection currently ranks 10th in the nation with a 88.1 save percentage. She also ranks 22nd in the nation with a 0.55 goals-against average.
Luke set the Utah single-season shutout mark last season with nine blankings. She finished with a goals-against average of 0.57, 19th in the nation, and her save percentage (.894) ranked fifth nationally.
Utah Loses Two in L.A. Utah soccer suffered its first setbacks of the season with a pair of losses to No. 1 UCLA and No. 23 USC. The Utes opened Pac-12 play with No. 4 Stanford and this marks the first time in program history that the team has played three-straight games against nationally-ranked foes.
Utah's Rock Solid RPI The RPI has Utah ranked No, 23 nationally, fifth among Pac-12 schools. The league has 10 squads in the top 45.
Utah's Preseason Pac-12 Picks Along with the returning Luke, three other Utes received preseason honors;
Megan Trabert,
Ashton Hall and
Katie Rigby.
Trabert started every game at center back for Utah last season and had a knack for scoring in big games. She is currently tied for third on the team with two goals this year.
Hall started 16 games for Utah and finished second on the team in scoring with 11 points. She is currently out for the season due to an injury.
Rigby missed almost all of 2012 due to injury but battled back and played in every contest for the Utes in 2013. After scoring the game-winner against Oregon last season, her first collegiate goal, she has two more tallies along with three assists this season. Her seven points rank second on the team.
Taylor's Tenure One for the Books Katie Taylor, a NSCAA All-Region selection last season has flown under the radar for most of her collegiate career but make no mistake, she has been an integral part to the recent success of Utah soccer.
In this, her senior season, the midfielder currently leads the Utes in assists and points. Her five helpers this season ranks second in the Pac-12 and give her 15 for her career. She needs one more to catch Amy Kofoed (1998-2001) for fifth place all-time in Utah history.
Taylor started every game for the Utes and led the team in goals and points last season, helping them to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006 and sixth time overall.
The Davis, Utah native also led the Utes in scoring as a sophomore with four goals and four assists.
Utah's New Class The Utes added nine newcomers to the team for the 2014 season including six true freshmen;
Tamaryn Braun,
Madi Clarkson,
Mariah Elmer,
July Gentry,
Janie Kearl and
Natalie Vukic.
Utah also brought in three transfers;
Mikayla Elmer, Mariah's sister, from Portland,
Audrey Gibb from Oregon State and
Addie Jensen from Columbia University.
Vukic has started every game for the Utes while the Elmer sisters have appeared in all 12 contests. Gibb missed one game against UVU due to an injury while Kearl has appeared in 10 contests, Jensen has seen action five times and Clarkson twice.
Scouting this Weekend's Opposition Oregon is unbeaten at home this season and returns to Eugene after a winless weekend against Arizona State and Arizona. Ten different players have scored for the Ducks this season with Lilly Archer's pair of tallies leading the way. Oregon's defensive unit of Kelsey Foo, Reilley Moore, Allie Rodriguez, Riley Smith and Caitlyn Wong, along with Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week honoree Abby Steele, has limited opponents to 0.68 goals per game.
Oregon State has struggled to score goals this season, netting only two in a loss to St. Mary's during non-conference play. Eleven true freshmen have seen the field in the 2014 campaign, with eight of them making at least one start. Emma Bergstrom, Nikki Faris and Natalie Higgins have all started each of the Beavers' 12 games this season as true freshmen.
Series History Utah is 7-1-1 all-time against Oregon, including a 3-1-1 mark in Eugene. Utah went to Eugene in 2011 and captured a 2-0 shutout victory in its inaugural match as a member of the Pac-12 Conference. Last year,
Katie Rigby netted the winner for the Utes in a 1-0 victory.
Utah is 2-3 all-time against Oregon State and have never won in Corvallis. Last season,
