GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams both won its quad-dual meet at the Intermountain Shootout in Grand Junction, Colo.
The Utah men's team defeated the U.S. Air Force Academy 259-113, Colorado Mesa 297-67 and BYU 236-136, while the women's team downed CMU 314-60 and BYU 291-83.
"This meet was a great experience for us," said Utah head coach Joe Dyksta. "We learned a lot about what we have to keep working to improve upon in training, but also realize that we are ahead of where we were last year at this point. I think our improved team depth was very apparent this weekend".
Teaming up for Utah's first of 11 wins on the day for the women's squad was Dorien Butter, Maddie Jamora, Rhianna Williams and Giuliana Gigliotti as they won the 200 free relay event with a time of 1:35.92. Jenna Griffith, Amanda Barrett, Sophie Fiscella and Selin Ozturk took third-place in the event with a time of 1:39.39 and they were followed by the team of Ashlyn Karosas, Jenna Marsh, Hailey Papst and Brianna Francis who finished in fourth-place with a time of 1:39.52.
Butter, Jamora, Williams and Gigliotti also teamed together for a first-place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:29.92, while Pabst, Maddie Meisel, Barrett and Petra Soininen finished second overall with a time of 3:35.12.
Soininen claimed the top spot in the 200 fly with a time of 2:04.94 and she was followed in second-place by Isabella Kearns (2:06.85). Soininen, who's finish in the 200 fly was a pool record in the event, also took the top spot in the 100 fly with a time of 56.67, while Melissa Paakh came in second-place (57.36).
Stina Colleou touched first in the 50 breast with a time of 30.41 and Marsh came in second with a time of 30.84. Butter followed finishing in third-place with a time of 30.99. Colleou also took first in the 200 breast (2:16.41), while Brianna Francis finished second (2:22.11).
In the 500 free, Meisel took first with time of 5:09.58 followed by Ozturk in second (5:12.30).
Taking first in the 200 IM was Francis with a time of 2:08.30. Kylie Boyce took second (2:10.50) and Kearns followed in third (2:10.87.
Gigliotti took first in the 100 free (52.30) with Butter following in second-place overall (52.34).
Taking the top three spots in the 200 back were Barrett (First, 2:02.18), Pabst in (Second, 2:04.13) and Megan Kawaguchi (Third, 2:04.84).
The men finished with seven first place finishes on Saturday with the team of Nick Soedel, Sean Bloore, Alex Brown and Alex Fernandes opened with a win in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:21.83.
In the 200 fly, the top four spots were taken by the Utes, with Chris Taber taking top honors(1:50.67) and Luis Macis taking second-place (1:51.33). David Fraser took third (1:52.66) and Ben Scott came in fourth (1:53.38).
Jack Burton had a second-place finish in the 50 breast with a time of 26.20, while Bence Kiraly (4:30.85), Peter Kotson (4:37.28) and Brandon Shreeve (4:37.97) were the first three swimmers to touch in the 500 free event, respectively.
Kristian Kron took third in both the 200 IM (1:53.61) and the 200 back (1:51.77) events, while Evan Indahl finished fourth overall (1:54.59) in 200 back.
In the 100 free, Soedel recorded a pool record as he claimed the top spot with a time of 43.40.
Fernandes took first in the 100 fly (49.86), Fraser came in second (50.18) and Kiraly finished in third (50.23).
Claiming the top spot in the 200 breast was Ganem Tebet with a time of 2:04.71, while Burton finished in second overall (2:04.82).
Kiraly, Soedel, Bloore and Fernandes teamed together to take first in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:01.75.
In diving events, Amanda Casillas took first in the three-meter event with a score of 258.35, while Jacob Crayne took second in the one-meter with a score of 293.50.
"Amanda had a solid, consistent meet that we can definitely build on," said Utah head diving coach Richard Marschner. "She's already at or above the level she finished at last year and Jake did really well for five of his six dives, so we just need to work a bit on the last one. He's diving at a high level for this early in the season."
The Ute women will take to the pool this Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Boise, Idaho to take on Boise State. Then both teams will take a three week break before heading to Las Vegas, Ariz. to take on Arizona and UNLV in a dual meet.
