HONOLULU, Hawaii. - After several days of hard work in the sun in Hawaii, the Utah men's & women's swimming & diving program competed in an unscored scrimmage with the University of Hawaii. The competition, although unorthodox, gave each athlete the opportunity to compete in two events for each team and saw the Utes perform well against the Warriors.
"I think today was a wonderful way to cap off a tremendous week of training for us here in Hawaii," said Utah head coach Joe Dykstra. "We've worked really hard all week and got some great quality training in. I think that was evident here today with some standout performances in an informal dual meet setting."
Over 20 events, the Utes took numerous victories and were led by efforts from numerous swimmers including Kristian Kron (200 back and 200 IM), Wil Gavato (100 and 200 breast), Nick Soedel (50 and 100 free), Jenna Griffith (100 back and 100 free), Petra Soininen (100 and 200 fly) and Stina Colleau (100 and 200 breast).
"Hawaii was such a great experience," said freshman Wil Gavato. "The training was intense, but I think it sets us up well for a great season. Mahalo to our Hawaii friends, who were such great hosts."
Earlier in the week, the divers also competed, facing competition from Hawaii and Pac-12 rivals, Arizona State. Over two days of competition, the Utes saw action on the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform events.
"Competing against Hawaii and Arizona State was a good way to start the season," said head diving coach Richard Marschner. "We had a great opportunity to compete on all three boards, and this will serve us well as the season starts to pick up. I'm very proud of how our divers competed, and look forward to seeing Arizona State again down the road."
Sophomore's Jacob Crayne and All-American Josiah Purss achieved qualifying standards for the end of season NCAA Zone Championships and were joined by senior co-captain Kersten Merry.
Up next for the Utes will be their first Pac-12 meet of the season on Saturday, Oct. 19 against Arizona, with the first 100 fans receiving a free Ute swim cap. The meet is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Ute Natatorium.
