This Week's Action...
The University of Utah women's soccer team (5-4-1, 1-0-0 Pac-12) will host its first Pac-12 home matches this weekend, beginning with Arizona State (4-5-0, 0-1-0 Pac-12) Friday at 7 p.m. It will be Youth Day at Ute Field, in conjunction with the Utah Youth Soccer Association, and festivities will include kids' activities starting at 5 p.m., a halftime shootout with Swoop, a postgame autograph session with the entire Utah team and postgame fireworks. Utah will then host Arizona (0-8-1, 0-1-0 Pac-12) at 1 p.m., Sunday. The Wildcats will first head to Boulder on Friday to face Colorado (3-5-1, 0-1-0 Pac-12).
Spier and Muirhead Go Back-to-Back...
Sophomore midfielders Harley Spier and Leslie Muirhead have each scored in Utah's last two games. Muirhead's goal was the game winner against Idaho State on Sept. 18, while Spier got match-winner honors last Friday at Oregon. They became the third Utes to score in back-to-back games this season, joining freshman midfielder McKel Wall.
Utes Win Inaugural Pac-12 Game...
With the 2-0 win at Oregon on Friday, Utah set several milestones regarding its membership in the Pac-12. The Utes earned their first victory, first road win, first shutout and scored their first goal as members of the new 12-team conference.
Debut Goal-Scorers Filling Up Stat Sheet...
Eight different Utes have hit the back of the net this year, including six players who have scored their first career goals. Spier and Muirhead were the most recent Utes to tally their first goals, both coming against Idaho State on Sept. 18. Each then scored in the following game at Oregon last Friday.
Five Different Utes Tally Game Winners...
Five different Utes have accounted for the game-winning goal in Utah's five victories this year. Three of those game winners also accounted for the first career goal for those players, including Muirhead (vs. ISU), freshman midfielder Avery Ford (vs. Weber State) and Wall (vs. UC Riverside). The other winners came from senior forward Erin Dalley (vs. Utah Valley) and Spier (at Oregon).
With the strikes from Ford and Wall, Utah has had two or more freshman secure game-winning goals in the same season for the first time since Adele Letro and Katy Reineke did so in 2005. Letro finished that season with a team-high seven goals, including three game winners.
Freshmen Account for Nearly Half of Utah's Points...
Six of the seven Utah freshmen who have seen the field this year have tallied points and all seven have cracked the starting lineup at least once. Forward Jill Robison, Ford and Wall have combined for four goals, while Robison, forward Katie Taylor, midfielder Ashton Hall and defender Sarah Duncan have all logged assists. In all, freshmen have racked up four goals and seven assists for 15 of Utah's 33 total points.
Turpen Earns Second Shutout, First for Utes in Pac-12...
Senior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen improved to 5-4-0 with Utah's 2-0 win on Friday, earning her second shutout of the year. Even more distinctly, she becomes the first Utah goalkeeper to ever make a save, get a win and earn a shutout in the Pac-12 era. Turpen made three saves in the game, raising her save percentage to .762 and lowering her goals-against-average to 1.14 for the season. Turpen has now racked up 32 total saves, fifth-most in the Pac-12, including several elite stops to preserve Utah wins or keep the Utes within striking distance.
Sophomore Cheyanne Mulcock has also appeared in three games and has yet to concede a goal while making seven saves. She has combined with Turpen to register a pair of team shutouts, including a 0-0 double-overtime draw on the road in the Utes' season opener at Cal State Fullerton, where she was the goalkeeper of record.
Scouting this Weekend's Opposition...
Arizona State Sun Devils
Arizona State carries a 4-5-0 record into Friday night's game and is coming off a 1-0 shutout loss at No. 17 California in its Pac-12 opener. The offensive trend for ASU appears to be feast or famine, as the Sun Devils have been shut out in four of their five losses, but have also recorded shutouts in all four of their victories.
Leading the offensive charge for ASU is Alexandra Doller with five goals, including a pair of game winners. Sierra Cook has also netted three, while five other Sun Devils have scored once. Holland Crook leads the team with two assists and seven others have added one helper.
Defensively, Alyssa Gillmore has played most of the time in net, posting a 3-4 record with two shutouts while making 26 saves and conceding 11 goals. Her GAA is now 1.40 and she holds a .703 save percentage. Vittoria Arnold has also seen action in three games for ASU and owns a 1-1 record. She has made two saves and allowed two goals.
Arizona State is coached by Kevin Boyd, who owns a 40-37-12 record in his fifth season.
Arizona Wildcats
Arizona enters the weekend at 0-8-1, still searching for its first victory of the season and looking to recover from a 7-0 loss at No. 1 Stanford. The Wildcats have been shut out eight times in nine games. Its only positive result thus far is a 0-0 draw against Texas Tech.
The Wildcats have mustered only two goals on the season, both coming in a 4-2 neutral-site loss to Oklahoma at the Sun Devil Desert Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Leeandra Smith and Brie Defelice were the goal-scorers, while Julia Glanz and Alex Smith were credited with assists.
Defensively, goalkeeper Ashley Jett has allowed 19 goals for a GAA of 2.11, while making 44 saves and posting a .698 save percentage. Lorena Aragon has gotten into one game, conceding two goals and making three saves in a 31-minute relief effort.
Arizona is coached by Lisa Oyen, now in her second season as the head coach and eighth overall with the Wildcats. She owns a 5-21-3 record.
The All-Time Series...
The Utes hold a 2-2 all-time record against Arizona State, including a 2-0 mark in home games. The two teams have each beaten the other twice at home, and by identical scores. Utah has twice captured a 1-0 shutout victory in Salt Lake City, including the last time the teams met in 2001, while the Sun Devils own a pair of 2-1 wins on their home turf in Tempe.
Utah is 4-5-0 all-time against Arizona, including a 2-1 record at Ute Field. The two squads faced off in non-conference play last year with the Wildcats taking a 1-0 overtime win. The last time Arizona came to Ute Field resulted in a 4-0 Wildcat win. Utah's last win in the series came on the road in Tuscon, a 2-1 victory in the 2007 season-opener, while the Utes' last home win against the `Cats was in 2006 by the same score.
Manning Victorious in 200th Game...
Utah's 3-1 win against Idaho State on Sept. 18 marked Rich Manning's 200th career game as the head coach of the Utes. Now in his 10th season guiding the squad, Manning is the third-longest tenured head coach in the Pac-12, trailing Washington's Leslie Gallimore (18th season) and Colorado's Bill Hempen (11th season). Manning carries a career record of 115-66-20 (.622) as he guides the Utes through their first season in the Pac-12.
Local Impact...
Six of the Utes' starting 11 in each of the last five games hail from the state of Utah. Six of Utah's seven goals along with four of its assists over that span were registered by natives of the Beehive State. The Utes carry 14 players from Utah on the roster and have seen 11 of them crack the starting lineup this year.
Three Utes Named to SMC Classic All-Tournament Team...
Utah had three players named to the Saint Mary's Classic All-Tournament Team. Leading the Utes was Wall, who tied for leading scorer honors at the tournament with two goals, finished tied for second among all players with four points, and was one of four different players to net a game winner in the event. Joining her was Robison, who scored once, and senior defender Lauren Dudley, who anchored the Ute defense and also got into the act on offense with two shots on goal.
Preseason Prognostication...
Stanford was the clear preseason favorite in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll, leading the voting with 121 points and receiving all 11 first-place votes. The rest of the field, in order: 2. UCLA (102); 3. Oregon State (96); 4. USC (86); 5. Washington (82); 6. California (78); 7. Arizona State (60); t8. Oregon (49); t8. Washington State (49); 10. Colorado (35); 11. Utah (18); 12.
