Match Notes - Week 6 at Oregon
This Week's Action...
The University of Utah women's soccer team (4-4-1, 0-0-0 Pac-12) plays its inaugural conference game as a member of the Pac-12 this week, traveling to Eugene, Ore., to face the Oregon Ducks (5-3-1, 0-0-0 Pac-12) on Friday. Kickoff from Papé FIeld is slated for 8 p.m. MT.
The Oregon game will be Utah's only action this week. The Utes' next game will be their conference home-opener against Arizona State on Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. It will be Youth Day at Ute Field and festitivities will include post-game fireworks.
Debut Goal-Scorers Filling Up Stat Sheet...
Eight different Utes have hit the back of the net this year, including six players who have scored their first career goals. Most recently, sophomore midfielders Harley Spier and Leslie Muirhead recorded their first goals in Sunday's 3-1 win over Idaho State.
Four Different Utes Account for Game Winners...
Four different Utes have accounted for the game-winning goal in Utah's four wins this year. Three of those game winners also accounted for the first career goal for those players, including Muirhead (vs. ISU), freshman midfielder Avery Ford (vs. Weber State) and freshman midfielder McKel Wall (vs. UC Riverside).
With the strikes from Ford and Wall, Utah has now had two or more freshman secure game-winning goals in the same season for the first time since Adele Letro and Katy Reineke did so in 2005. Letro finished the year with a team-high seven goals, including three game winners.
Freshmen Account for More Than Half of Utah's Points...
Six of the seven Utah freshmen who have seen the field this year have scored points and all seven have made at least one start. Forward Jill Robison, Ford and Wall have combined for four goals, while Robison, forward Katie Taylor, midfielder Ashton Hall and defender Sarah Duncan have all logged assists. In all, freshmen have racked up four goals and seven assists for 15 of Utah's 28 total points.
Turpen and Mulcock Defending Net Well...
Senior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen improved to 4-4-0 with Utah's win on Sunday. She made three saves in the game while allowing only one goal, lowering her goals-against-average to 1.29 for the season. Turpen has also racked up 29 saves for a .744 save percentage, including several elite stops to preserve Utah wins or keep the Utes within striking distance. If one were to discount the four goals allowed at BYU when the Utes were reduced to 10 players, Turpen's GAA would lower to 0.89.
Sophomore Cheyanne Mulcock has also appeared in three games and has yet to concede a goal while making seven saves. She has combined with Turpen to register a pair of team shutouts, including a 0-0 double-overtime draw on the road in the Utes' season opener at Cal State Fullerton, where she was the goalkeeper of record.
Manning Victorious in 200th Game...
Sunday's 3-1 win against Idaho State marked Rich Manning's 200th career game as the head coach of the Utes. Now in his 10th season guiding the Utes, Manning is the third-longest tenured head coach in the Pac-12, trailing Washington's Leslie Gallimore (18th season) and Colorado's Bill Hempen (11th season). Manning carries a career record of 114-66-20 (.620) as he guides the Utes into their first Pac-12 game this weekend.
Local Impact...
Six of the Utes' starting 11 in each of the last four games have hailed from the state of Utah. Six of Utah's seven goals along with four of its assists over that span were registered by natives of the Beehive State. The Utes carry 14 players from Utah on the roster and have seen 11 of them crack the starting lineup this year.
Scouting this Weekend's Opposition...
Oregon Ducks
After going undefeated with a 4-0-1 record and not allowing a goal through their first five games to start the season, the Oregon Ducks have lost three of their last four games, including a 2-1 neutral-site loss to Florida International at the Oregon State Tournament in Corvallis, Ore. They also suffered back-to-back shutouts at the hands of LSU, 1-0, and No. 20 Illinois, 5-0, at the LSU Tournament in Baton Rouge.
Julie Armstrong leads the Oregon attack with four goals and is also tied for the team lead with three assists. Maddy Mercier has contributed three goals, while Mo Fitzgerald has added three assists as well. Four other Ducks have tallied one goal each, with three more chipping in one assist.
Defensively, Abby Steele has played the majority of time in net, allowing nine goals while making 30 saves for a goals-against-average of 1.25 and a save percentage of .769. She has one shutout on the year, while posting a 1-3-1 record. Lindsay Parlee has appeared in four games and is credited with four of the Ducks' five wins while making four saves and not conceding a single goal.
Oregon finished last season with a 7-10-3 record, going 3-5-1 in Pac-10 play. The Ducks are coached by Tara Erickson, who owns a 59-55-14 record, now in her seventh season.
The All-Time Series...
The Utes hold a 4-1-1 all-time record against Oregon, including a 1-1-1 mark in Eugene. The last time the two teams faced off was also on the Ducks' home field, where Utah fell by a 3-2 score in 2008. The Utes' last victory against Oregon came in 2007 in Salt Lake City by a 2-0 count.
Three Utes Named to SMC Classic All-Tournament Team...
Utah had three players named to the Saint Mary's Classic All-Tournament Team. Leading the Utes was Wall, who tied for leading scorer honors at the tournament with two goals, finished tied for second among all players with four points, and was one of four different players to net a game winner in the event. Joining her was Robison, who scored once, and senior defender Lauren Dudley, who anchored the Ute defense and also got into the act on offense with two shots on goal.
Utah's Last Outing...
Utah completed a home weekend sweep with Sunday's 3-1 victory over Idaho State (3-5-1) to wrap up non-conference play and take a two-match win streak into it's Pac-12 opener. The game-winning goal came off the foot of Muirhead.
Preseason Prognostication...
Stanford was the clear preseason favorite in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll, leading the voting with 121 points and receiving all 11 first-place votes. The rest of the field, in order: 2. UCLA (102); 3. Oregon State (96); 4. USC (86); 5. Washington (82); 6. California (78); 7. Arizona State (60); t8. Oregon (49); t8. Washington State (49); 10. Colorado (35); 11. Utah (18); 12.
