Ogden, Utah- The University of Utah women's track & field team opened up the Weber State Invitational today with the throwing events. The Utes were led by Cynthia Sanchez's personal-best performance in the weight throw event.
"We had a pretty good meet today," said Utah assistant coach Tapio Kuusela. "We still aren't close to peaking, there is more to come."
Sanchez had a career-best performance in the weight throw with a throw of 17.87 meters. Her throw earned first place overall in the event. Finishing second overall was Anneli Stahl, who threw a distance of 17.67 meters.
In the shot put, the Utes had four athletes make the final round. Nikkie Rudder led the way with a new personal-record mark of 14.44m (second place). Alanna Nulph has improved at every meet and made the finals with a mark of 13.97m. Candus Aiello (13.52m) and Destanae Howerton-Davis (40-4 feet) finished seventh and ninth, respectively for the Utes.
"Things are moving in the right direction," said Kuusela. "Our athletes are good competitors and I expect big things."
The Utes will continue action in the running events at the Swenson Indoor Track in Ogden, Utah on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. MDT.
