OGDEN, Utah- Sophomore Angela Kaplar set a new school-record in the 55m hurdles as the Utes wrapped up action at the Weber State Invitational. The Utah throwers dominated the meet, setting several personal records in their final meet before the Mountain West Conference Championships.
"Overall, we got exactly what we wanted from this meet, which was a great tune-up heading into conference," said Utah associate head coach Burke Bockman. "The meet was great for those who will be competing next week at the conference championships as well as a good finish to the indoor season for those who will not be going."
Cynthia Sanchez had a career-best performance in the weight throw with a throw of 58-7.50, which earned her first place overall in the event. Finishing second overall was Anneli Stahl, who threw a distance of 57-11.75. In the shot put, the Utes had four athletes make the final round. Nikkie Rudder led the way, placing second with a new personal-record mark of 47-5.25. Alanna Nulph made the final round where she posted a throw of 45-10.00 earning her fourth-place. Candus Aiello (42-2.75) and Destanae Howerton-Davis (40-10.25) finished sixth and ninth, respectively for the Utes. In each of their events, Rudder, Nulph and Sanchez posted marks that rank among the all-time top 10 performances in school history.
"We still aren't peaking," said Utah throws coach Tapio Kuusela. "We are moving in the right direction and our athletes are good competitors, so I expect big things to come."
Kaplar continued her streak of great performances in the hurdle events, setting a new-school record in the 55m hurdles with her preliminary round time of 7.96. In the final round, she placed first with a time of 7.99. Delaney Fox competed in the 55m hurdles as an unattached runner, where she clocked a personal-record time of 8.59, finishing third overall).Teammate Brianna LeRoy finished second in the preliminary round with a new personal-best time of 8.31 before placing sixth in the final round. LeRoy also posted a season-best when she placed first in the long jump with a distance of 18-8.00.
Junior Langley Iverson was the event champion in the high jump event with a mark of 5-7.75. Iverson has already qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships and currently has the highest jump in the MWC with 6-0.75.
Kaitlyn Stringfellow and Hilary Troutner set new personal records in the mile event. Stringfellow finished in a time of 5:30.64, placing first in the event. Troutner completed her indoor season, clocking a time of 5:39.20 for a fourth-place finish.
The Utes will continue their season on Thursday at the MWC Championships held in Albuquerque, N.M.
