SALT LAKE CITY - Senior guard Josh Watkins led the way with 14 points, but the University of Utah men's basketball team (1-8) lost its Deseret First Duel matchup against BYU (8-2), 62-41, Saturday at the Jon M. Hunstman Center.
Watkins extended his double-digit-point streak to 14 games with 14 points. He also dished out five assists and turned in five rebounds, which was one away from tying his season high.
Junior wing Cedric Martin was the second Ute in double-figures with 10 points, his third game of 10 or more points this season. His previous season-high mark was 11 against Montana State on Nov. 19.
Junior forward Dijon Farr collected a career-high seven rebounds, while Kareem Storey and Jason Washburn scored six points apiece.
The Utes took five of the first six points in the contest and BYU missed its first six shots. The Cougars did not score a field goal until 5:18 elapsed, but quickly came back with eight straight to take an 8-5 advantage. Six straight points by Storey kept Utah within a pair at 13-11, but BYU was able to take its largest lead of the half (22-13) thanks to a 9-3 run. The Cougars took a 25-17 lead into the locker room at halftime as Storey led the way six points, while Farr grabbed six rebounds. The Utah defense held BYU to a 26.6 shooting percentage from the field and a season-low mark for points in a first half this season.
Utah started the second half with another 5-1 run, but BYU went on a 19-4 stretch to extend its lead to 19, 45-26, its largest lead of the contest to that point. The Cougars went on to lead by as many as 22 (57-35) en route to a 61-42 victory.
BYU was led by a game-high 19 points from Noah Hartsock, while Charles Abouo (11) and Craig Cusick (10) combined for 21 points. Brandon Davies controlled a game-high nine rebounds.
BYU now leads this year's Deseret First Duel by a 16-6 margin. The next contest is in women's basketball this afternoon in Provo. Tipoff from the Marriott Center is set for 3 p.m.
