Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
"When we talked with the team a little bit afterward, we said that there are a lot of different skills that go into being successful as a basketball player. Shooting skills, dribbling skills, and passing skills. Some guys are completely non athletic, but find a way to survive. The ability to play hard I truly believed was maybe a skill we didn't have. Our guys showed us that they have that skill and they have raised the bar higher now and I can expect them to play harder and more consistently. I can walk out of the Huntsman Center tonight feeling ten times different than I felt...not because it's BYU...but I saw the effort. If we are going to go down, we need to go down swinging and I felt we at least gave that an opportunity to happen tonight."
On the team's defense
"That is one thing I really hadn't seen. We saw little glimpses of it against UMass, but we really haven't seen guys get down and rotate, and get out to shooters the way they did. So seeing that energy [was great]. I thought we battled in the post. [Jason] Washburn got in a little bit of foul trouble which hurt us, but I thought our guys battled. Javon [Dawson] played more minutes than he has played all year. I was pretty impressed with our energy, but we need to build on it. It needs to happen at every game, not just when BYU shows up to our building."
On effort and energy
"We haven't felt it a lot. The players in the locker room have been dealing with it. It has really got to be a staple for us. We may be an underdog in every game we play this year. There is no game on our schedule that we shouldn't come and just fight like dogs to begin with on both ends of the floor."
Senior guard Josh Watkins
"We played hard. We laid it on the line. It is just one of those games where the outcome doesn't show it. We played really hard. Unfortunately, we didn't make enough shots. But that will come. The defense played really hard. We just had it in us and today I felt we played 40 minutes of basketball. We just didn't make enough shots."
BYU Head Coach Dave Rose
On bouncing back from a slow start
"I just think that the game in the first half was exactly how we expected it to be - really physical - you don't really know what both teams are going to score. Last year, with about six or seven minutes gone in the game, both teams were just scoring but with really physical play. We were having a hard time scoring, both teams, and I felt like if we could be patient and kind of play through contact and how physical [the game was]."
"[Utah] did a great job of controlling the pace on the first half and in the second half we were able to get some shots in transition and were able to get the pace more like we wanted."
Did you challenge Noah [Hartsock] and Charles [Abouo] to get going during halftime?
"You really depend on your guys who have the most experience and both of those guys have played up here a lot. This game is a lot different, you play for more than just one win, you play for a game that everybody talks about for one year. You have to understand how important it is to their team and how important it to our team and guys emotionally are going to have to control themselves and continue to play. I do believe that it was a really hard-fought game by both teams and I am proud of our guys for being able to make a few more shots."
