SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah junior Amanda Mergaert will run in the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships. It will be her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships on Monday in Terre Haute, Ind.
Watch the race here.
"Amanda has had an outstanding season," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "She has run four races and finished in the top-10 at all of them. Her performances earned her all Pac-12 Conference honors for the first time as well as all-region honors for the second straight season."
At the NCAA Mountain Region Championships, Mergaert clocked a time of 21:14.5, which earned her ninth place.
"The regional performance this past weekend was really gutsy," Kepler commented. "She had to hold on to ninth place, with several competitors challenging her over the last mile of the race if she was to giver herself a chance to qualify. She stepped up and earned her spot by being head strong and relying on her past experiences."
Mergaert is the first Utah athlete to qualify for back-to-back NCAA Championships in over 15 years and marks the third time in the previous four seasons that Utah has had an individual qualifier.
At the 2010 NCAA Championships, Mergaert placed 45th missing All-American status by five places.
"Amanda's region race was yet another tactical masterpiece," Kepler said. "She was always in the right spot near the lead group through the early stages of the race and then relied on her toughness and past positive championships experiences to do enough to advance to the NCAA meet again."
This season, Mergaert recorded fourth-place finishes at both the Stanford and Chile Pepper Invitationals. Mergaert finished 10th at the Pac-12 Championships, putting her in the top echelon on athletes in the country.
"The last few weeks Amanda has been slowed by a hip and back injury that has forced us to alter her training," Kepler stated. "This year's performances have been more impressive due to the mental focus it requires to not run at 100%."
Mergaert is slated to compete in the six-kilometer championship race at Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind., beginning at 12:58 p.m. ET. A live webcast of the championships will be broadcast from noon to 1:30 p.m. ET.
