SEATTLE, Wash. - The University of Utah women's soccer team (7-6-1, 3-2-0 Pac-12) fell by a 4-0 score at Washington (6-5-3, 2-2-1 Pac-12) Sunday.
Washington drew first blood in the 23rd minute as Jaclyn Softli put the Huskies up 1-0 and giving them the eventual game-winning goal. Sarah Martinez got possession and knocked a long ball over the top of the Utah defense. Softli got inside her defender and won the footrace to the ball, then hit an 18-yard shot past the diving effort of Utah senior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen.
Washington got its next three goals in the second half as Kate Deines (55:36), Hillary Zevenbergen (79:11) and Martinez (80:25) all scored for the Huskies.
Utah was outshot 14-8 overall, with shots-on-goal going 7-2 for the Huskies. UW earned four corner kicks with only one going to the Utes, while fouls were whistled 11-10 against Utah. Turpen finished the game with three saves, while Jorde Lafontaine-Kussmann stopped both of Utah's attempts on goal.
"I think if we can come into road games with more confidence it will go a long way toward being successful as we move forward," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "We did some good things today but there are a few things we have to clean up and we have to learn a few lessons from this. We can't play tentatively, we have to play with that same belief and confidence that we showed in our previous few games. I think going forward for this team it's more about our mindset than anything. We can't let a mistake or giving up a goal set us back. We have to move on and insist on playing the way we want to."
After seeing their five-match win streak snapped Friday night, Utah has now lost two consecutive games by way of a shutout and was outscored 6-0 on the weekend.
Utah is back in action Friday, Oct. 14, as the Utes return home to host Oregon State (9-3-1, 3-1-0 Pac-12). It will be the "Power of Pink" game at Ute Field, part of Utah Athletics' ongoing efforts to help support breast cancer awareness. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. MT.
