BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of Utah women's soccer team (8-8-1, 4-4 Pac-12) fell by a 2-0 score at California (11-4-2, 4-2-2 Pac-12) Sunday.
"I think we got a first-hand view this weekend of two really good soccer programs," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "Hopefully we have learned some good lessons about playing on the road in the Pac-12 and now we can return home and try to compete more successfully. I'm confident we can bounce back this week and put on a few good performances at Ute Field."
Cal scored the game's only goal just before halftime as Mekenna DeBack netted her fifth goal of the season in the 44th minute of play. Betsy Hassett was credited with the assist. The Golden Bears put the game out of reach in the 84th minute as Danielle Brunache put away a penalty kick, the first penalty called against the Utes this season.
Senior Ute goalkeeper Hannah Turpen made a career-high 10 saves in the game, tying for the sixth-most stops in a game in Ute history.
The Golden Bears out-shot Utah, 21-2 overall, with shots-on-goal going 12-1 against the Utes, who did not register their first shot of the game until senior defender Lauren Porter's attempt in the 83rd minute was saved by California goalkeeper Emily Kruger. Cal took five corner kicks to Utah's one, while fouls where even at 10 apiece.
Suffering a pair of shutouts away from home this weekend, the Utes slip to 1-7-1 in road contests. The Utes now return home, where they are 6-1, for three consecutive home games to finish out the regular season.
Utah hosts USC Friday, Oct. 28, at Ute Field, kicking off at 7 p.m. MT. The Utes will then host UCLA on Oct. 30 at 1 p.m., followed by the regular-season finale and Senior Night on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. vs. Colorado.
