Today's Action...
The University of Utah women's soccer team (6-4-1, 2-0-0 Pac-12) goes for its fourth consecutive victory Sunday against Arizona (0-8-2, 0-1-1 Pac-12).
Two Seniors, Two Freshmen, Two Headers, One Victory...
Senior defender Lauren Dudley headed in a corner kick with just 1:02 left in Friday night's game to give the Utes a 2-1 victory over Arizona State. Earlier in the game, trailing 1-0, senior forward Erin Dalley scored on a header to pull the game level in the 61st minute.
Both goals were assisted by freshmen. Dudley's game-winning goal was off a corner kick by midfielder Avery Ford, who logged her second assist of the game. She was also credited with an assist on the first goal as she fed the ball to fellow freshman Katie Taylor, who hit the cross that found Dalley's head for the game-tying strike.
Senior Captain Returns from Injury...
Senior defender Lauren Porter, the team captain, made her return to the field Friday night in the win against Arizona State. She had missed eight games with a knee injury suffered at BYU in the second game of the season. Porter is expected to start Sunday in place of the injured Jenny Hutton, who also suffered a knee injury Friday and had been starting in Porter's absence.
Utes Riding Four-Match Win Streak...
Utah has won four consecutive matches and six of their last seven contests after starting the year 0-3-1. During that stretch, the Utes have gone 4-0 at home, 1-1 on the road and 1-0 in neutral-site matches.
Utes Win Inaugural Pac-12 Game, then Make it Two Straight...
With the 2-0 win at Oregon on Sept. 23, Utah set several milestones regarding its membership in the Pac-12. The Utes earned their first victory, first road win, first shutout and scored their first goal as members of the new 12-team conference. The Utes then made it two straight with the 2-1 victory over ASU on Friday.
Spier and Muirhead Go Back-to-Back...
Sophomore midfielders Harley Spier and Leslie Muirhead each scored in back-to-back games last week. Muirhead's goal was the game winner against Idaho State on Sept. 18, while Spier got match-winner honors Sept. 23 at Oregon. They became the third Utes to score in back-to-back games this season, joining freshman midfielder McKel Wall.
Debut Goal-Scorers Filling Up Stat Sheet...
Eight different Utes have hit the back of the net this year, including six players who have scored their first career goals. Spier and Muirhead were the most recent Utes to tally their first goals, both coming against Idaho State on Sept. 18. Each then scored in the following game at Oregon last Friday.
Six Different Utes Tally Game Winners...
Six different Utes have netted the game-winning goal in Utah's six victories this year. Three of those game winners also accounted for the first career goal for those players, including Muirhead (vs. ISU), Ford (vs. Weber State) and Wall (vs. UC Riverside). The other winners came from Dalley (vs. Utah Valley), Spier (at Oregon) and Dudley (vs. Arizona State).
With the strikes from Ford and Wall, Utah has had two or more freshman secure game-winning goals in the same season for the first time since Adele Letro and Katy Reineke did so in 2005. Letro finished that season with a team-high seven goals, including three game winners.
Freshmen Account for Nearly Half of Utah's Points...
Six of the seven Utah freshmen who have seen the field this year have tallied points and all seven have cracked the starting lineup at least once. Forward Jill Robison, Ford and Wall have combined for four goals, while Taylor, Robison, midfielder Ashton Hall and defender Sarah Duncan have all logged assists. In total, freshmen have racked up four goals and 10 assists for 18 of Utah's 40 total points.
Turpen Posts First-Ever Pac-12 shutout at Oregon...
Senior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen got the win in Utah's 2-0 shutout of Oregon on Sept. 23, her second shutout of the year. Even more distinctly, she became the first Utah goalkeeper to ever make a save, get a win and earn a shutout in the Pac-12 era.
With the win over Arizona State on Friday, Turpen improved to 6-4-0 on the year as she made three saves, bringing her save percentage to .761 and lowering her goals-against-average to 1.13 for the season. Turpen has now racked up 35 total saves, fifth-most in the Pac-12, including several elite stops to preserve Utah wins or keep the Utes within striking distance.
Sophomore Cheyanne Mulcock has also appeared in three games and has yet to concede a goal while making seven saves. She has combined with Turpen to register a pair of team shutouts, including a 0-0 double-overtime draw on the road in the Utes' season opener at Cal State Fullerton, where she was the goalkeeper of record.
Scouting this Weekend's Opposition...
Arizona Wildcats
Arizona enters the weekend at 0-8-2, still searching for its first victory of the season. The Wildcats are coming off a 2-2 draw at Colorado on Friday night, which doubled their goal output for the season. Arizona has been shut out eight times in 10 games.
The Wildcats have mustered only four goals on the season, two coming in a 4-2 neutral-site loss to Oklahoma and the other two coming Friday night. Leeandra Smith, Brie Defelice, Jessica Culver and Susana Melendez have all scored for Arizona.
Defensively, goalkeeper Ashley Jett has allowed 21 goals for a GAA of 2.11, while making 51 saves and posting a .698 save percentage. Lorena Aragon has gotten into one game, conceding two goals and making three saves in a 31-minute relief effort.
Arizona is coached by Lisa Oyen, now in her second season as the head coach and eighth overall with the Wildcats. She owns a 5-21-4 record.
The All-Time Series...
Utah is 4-5-0 all-time against Arizona, including a 2-1 record at Ute Field. The two squads faced off in non-conference play last year with the Wildcats taking a 1-0 overtime win. The last time Arizona came to Ute Field resulted in a 4-0 Wildcat win. Utah's last win in the series came on the road in Tuscon, a 2-1 victory in the 2007 season-opener, while the Utes' last home win against the `Cats was in 2006 by the same score.
Manning Victorious in 200th Game...
Utah's 3-1 win against Idaho State on Sept. 18 marked Rich Manning's 200th career game as the head coach of the Utes. Now in his 10th season guiding the squad, Manning is the third-longest tenured head coach in the Pac-12, trailing Washington's Leslie Gallimore (18th season) and Colorado's Bill Hempen (11th season). Manning carries a career record of 115-66-20 (.622) as he guides the Utes through their first season in the Pac-12.
Local Impact...
Six of the Utes' starting 11 in each of the last six games have hailed from the state of Utah. Six of Utah's seven goals along with four of its assists over that span were registered by natives of the Beehive State. The Utes carry 14 players from Utah on the roster and have seen 11 of them crack the starting lineup this year.
Preseason Prognostication...
Stanford was the clear preseason favorite in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll, leading the voting with 121 points and receiving all 11 first-place votes. The rest of the field, in order: 2. UCLA (102); 3. Oregon State (96); 4. USC (86); 5. Washington (82); 6. California (78); 7. Arizona State (60); t8. Oregon (49); t8. Washington State (49); 10. Colorado (35); 11. Utah (18); 12.
