PROVO, Utah - Michelle Plouffe had her sixth double-double of the year with 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Utah women's basketball team fell to Brigham Young on Wednesday evening, 68-50.
Utah struggled early, as BYU took a 6-0 lead through the first 2:20 of the game. Utah found its rhythm with a 6-0 run to pull even within the first four minutes, as Janita Badon got the scoring started with a free-throw and Plouffe added a three-pointer before Badon's jumper tied it.
BYU was able to regain the momentum, controlling most of the first half and pulling ahead by as many as nine points, 19-10, with just over six minutes left. A three-pointer from Iwalani Rodrigues helped get Utah back in the game. After trading baskets over the next minute for an eight-point BYU lead, 23-15, Utah reeled off a 7-0 run over the following minute to come within one, 23-22, with 4:05 left. Badon completed a three-point play after being fouled after a steal, and Rachel Messer also had a jumper as part of the run.
Just three baskets were made under the three minute mark, and BYU held a 29-26 lead at halftime. Badon had 12 points in the first half.
Both teams continued to battle out of the locker room, as neither team scored through the first three minutes of the second half and they traded baskets for the next several minutes. With the score tied, 33-33, BYU began to take control after Jazmine Foreman was fouled on a three-point shot and made all three of her free throws. It was the start of a 7-0 run for the Cougars. BYU outscored Utah 39-24 in the second half, and although Utah continued to battle the Cougars kept the game just out of reach.
Plouffe scored 15 of her 20 points in the second half.
Badon was also in double figures with 17 points. She had five assists and a pair of steals.
Rebounding was the biggest difference in the game, with BYU outrebounding Utah, 46-29. The Cougars had 19 second-chance points.
"This game is a good measuring stick for our team," interim head coach Anthony Levrets said. "This is our third game in the league and this team has come a really long way. This was a good learning game. We will be better next time out and the next time we play them."
Utah returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 15, against Wyoming.
