COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Utah men's swimming & diving team was selected to finish fifth and the Ute women's team was picked to tie for fifth in this week's Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Preseason Coaches Poll, announced this week by the league office.
The Ute men's team collected eight points, while the Utah women's team tied with Colorado State after earning 33 points.
UNLV was voted the favorite to win the men's swimming and diving title with a total of 25 points, including five first-place votes. BYU followed in second place with 18 points and Air Force claimed third with 17 points. Wyoming received one first-place vote and was fourth with 16 points. TCU followed the Utes in sixth with six points.
BYU was picked to win the women's championship after receiving six first-place votes and garnering 62 points. San Diego State gathered a pair of first-place votes for a second-place total of 56 points. Wyoming received one first-place vote to take the third position at 50 points, while UNLV sits fourth with 45 points. TCU (22 points), New Mexico (13 points) and Air Force (10 points) followed the Utes and Rams in seventh, eighth and ninth place, respectively.
"We're really excited about where our teams are headed this year. Everyone in our program has a lot higher expectations than finishing fifth," Utah head coach Greg Winslow. "We're looking forward to showing everyone in the MWC that we can finish strong."
Both Ute squads will have a have a lot talent to work with in the 2010-11 season with Olympic Trials qualifiers Natalie Edge, Hannah Caron, and Kristina Evans on the women's side. On the men's team, Brent Murray won the 50 freestyle at the 2010 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming Junior National Championships and took the bronze medal at the 2010 Junior Pan Pacific Championships with the fastest 50 free time ever recorded by an American at the meet, 22.78 seconds.
The Utah women's swimming and diving team begins its season Saturday at New Mexico. The first event in Albuquerque, N.M., is slated to start at 2 p.m. MT. The Ute men will open their season Friday, Oct. 8 at the Mesa State Invitational in Grand Junction, Colo.
