2010 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship Bracket
INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Utah women's tennis team (17-7) has earned an at-large selection to the 2010 NCAA championships and will face Washington (11-6) in the first-round, Friday, May 14, in Gainesville, Fla. The Utes will make their first appearance in the tournament since 1998.
"We are really excited to make the tournament," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "Completing two of our goals this year, being the regular season MWC champs and going to the NCAA tournament, definitely shows how much we have improved as a team. I have a lot of respect for Washington but they are a team that, if we try hard enough, we can beat."
The Utes are a 33-48 seed, while Washington is a 17-32 seed. Florida is the No. 11 seed in the tournament and will face 49-64 seed South Carolina State in the first round. The Utah-Washington winner will face the UF-SCSU winner in the second round, Saturday, May 15, for the right to advance to the championship site in Athens, Ga.
In his only third-year as Utah's head coach, Iandolo led the Utes to an unbeaten 8-0 record in the Mountain West Conference and their first regular-season league title since 1983. Utah has not reached the NCAA tournament since making a run of three consecutive appearances from 1996-98.
"Qualifying for the NCAA tournament is a wonderful accomplishment for our women's tennis program and a testament not only to the job Mat Iandolo has done in just three years as our head coach, but to our student-athletes," said Utah Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill. "Those of us in the athletics department, as well as the strong tennis community in Salt Lake City, share in the excitement that comes with our women's tennis team's success."
Utah has never advanced past the first round of play at the NCAA Championships. Washington reached the round of 16 in last year's NCAA tournament.
