LARAMIE, Wyo. - Kalee Whipple scored 17 points to lead the Utah women's basketball team to a 52-48 victory over Wyoming on Sunday, Feb. 28. It was Wyoming's first conference loss at home this season.
Utah is on a five-game winning streak and has won six of its last seven contests. With a 9-5 Mountain West Conference record, the Utes are tied for second in the MWC with Brigham Young. Utah takes on the Cougars on Wednesday evening.
Whipple was one of three players in double-figure scoring. Taryn Wicijowski had 12 points while Janita Badon just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Halie Sawyer pulled in a team-high 11 rebounds.
The hard-fought contest was tied 10 times and the lead changed hands seven times. Neither team was able to hold the momentum for very long, although both teams were able to go on significant scoring runs late in the game.
With 6:20 remaining in the second half and Utah up 43-38 after a 9-0 run, Wyoming started an 8-0 run to take a three-point lead, 46-43, with 2:56 left. Jade Kennedy had four points of the run for the Cowgirls. However, they would only score two points the remainder of the way as the Utes forced Wyoming into miscues to go on to the win.
Whipple and Wicijowski led a 5-0 run to push Utah into a two-point lead before Carlson tied the game with a layup with 59 seconds left, 48-48. On Utah's possession, Carlson fouled out on Whipple with 37 seconds remaining. Whipple hit two free throws to put Utah up by two. After Wyoming's timeout, Utah forced the shot clock down and Whipple blocked Emma Langford's attempted layup with nine seconds left on the clock. Although Whipple was fouled on the play and missed her free throw, Randi Richardson sealed Wyoming's fate when she was called for a travel at the baseline with under two seconds left. On the Utah inbounds, Badon took the ball the length of the court for a layup as the game ended.
