SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's tennis head coach Mat Iandolo has announced the signing of four-star recruit Sammie Watson to a National Letter of Intent.
"Over the last two years Sammie Watson has become one of the best prospects in the intermountain region," said Iandolo "She is the top high school senior in Colorado. She is extremely driven and will no doubt improve greatly at the Pac-10 level."
Watson joins the Utes from Denver, Colo., where she was a Junior Olympic ski racer until the age of 13, when she decided to fully commit herself to tennis.
"I won my first few tournaments and got third in my first Intermountain Summer Sectional," Watson stated. "And from that moment on I felt like tennis is what I wanted to do.
"I felt like Utah was the perfect fit for me because I already knew a couple of the girls on the team prior to visiting and ended up loving the whole team," Watson continued. "I also believe Coach Iandolo can take my game to the next level mentally and physically and can really push me to be the best player that I can possibly be over these next four years. When I came here for my official visit I just felt like this was the place for me where I can excel in everything I choose to do and be the best that I can be!"
Since fully committing herself to tennis, Watson has won the ITA Easter Circuit in Las Vegas, Nev. the ITA Sweetheart Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo. the ITA Memorial Day Circuit in Boise, Idaho, as well as several other intermountain tournaments. She netted a top-70 national ranking in the USTA National 16's Standings.
Watson won the Colorado 4-A State singles title as a freshman and a sophomore playing at the No. 1 singles position for her school Kent Denver and has won numerous regional player of the year awards.
