PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah swimming and diving team raced against their in-state rival BYU in a Freshmen-Sophomore exhibition meet Thursday in Provo. Although this meet was not officially scored, the Utes won nine out of 22 events and placed second in eight others.
"It was a very fun meet and there were a lot of great races tonight!" Utah head coach Greg Winslow said. " I had never seen some of these freshmen race before, so it was exciting to finally see them in action. Now I have a better idea of what our team needs to work on for this season."
Freshman Traycie Swartz had an excellent evening, winning both the 100 free (53.07) and 100 back (57.67), and setting a school record with her time in the 100 back.
"Swartz's time in the 100 back is the fifth-fastest time ever posted by a Ute woman," Winslow said.
Swartz was also a part of the winning 200 free relay (1:37.79) along with Chardonnay Biter-Mundt, Samantha Zuch, and Elizabeth Thompson. Biter-Mundt also won the 50 free (24.52) and assisted in the 200 medley relay that finished second (1:46.70). Swartz, Zuch, and Sarah Boylen were also on the 200 medley relay team.
"Chardonnay Biter-Mundt was fantastic tonight," Winslow said. "She really helped anchor our relays and swam really well for Utah."
Nicole Ligeza posted another win for the Utes in the 200 IM (2:08.07).
As for the men's team, the Utes overtook BYU in the sprinting freestyle events. Garret Beamen, Brent Murray, and Bjorn Gunnarsson took the top three spots in the 100 free with the times of 47.12, 47.19, and 48.00, respectively.
Beaman also won the 200 free (1:46.12), and was on the runner-up 200 free relay (1:25.90). Also on the 200 free relay was Andy Lamb, Gunnarsson, and Murray. Murray won the 50 free (21.29) while Gunnarsson finished right on his tail (21.71).
"Garret Beaman hasn't raced in two years, so it was good to see him back in the water again. He did an outstanding job tonight," Winslow said.
Another strong performance for the Utah men's team was a win by Karson Applin in the 100 fly (51.35).
Tonight through tomorrow (Oct. 8-9), the Ute men will compete at the Mesa State Invitational in Grand Junction, Colo.
"It will be tough for our freshmen and sophomores to do eight more races in a two-day period with little rest following tonight's meet," Winslow said. "This test will help build their character. It will also help define what kind of team we are early in the season."
