Utah Soccer Plays To 2-2 Draw With LMU

LOS ANGELES - In its first overtime game of the season, the University of Utah soccer team (5-4-1) played to a 2-2 draw with LMU (5-3-1) Sunday on a neutral field in Los Angeles. The Utes surrendered a late 2-1 lead as the Lions pulled level with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation. Utah's goals came from senior midfielder Kelly Isleib, who netted her team-leading fourth of the year, and freshman forward Hanna Terry, her third of the season.

"It was nice to get a result against a good LMU team today and I think we did some nice things overall this weekend," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "We certainly got a lot of feedback on areas we need to work on if we are going to become the team we want to be. We will take that information and get back to work on Tuesday to get ready for Utah State."

At the 83:44 mark, the Lions erased a one-goal Utah advantage for the second time, tying the contest at 2-2 and ultimately sending the game to extra time. Kelley Lawson played the ball downfield and wide, where Marissa Zamora got off a sliding shot from the corner of the box that found its way into the net for the game-tying goal.

Utah had gained a 2-1 lead in the 73rd minute Isleib drilled home a low free kick, beating the LMU goalkeeper Allyssa Clark to lift the Utes to a 2-1 edge. It was second time this year that Isleib has scored on a direct free kick.

Utah drew the game's first blood in the 21st minute as Terry collected a long ball on the left wing, sent forward by freshman midfielder Stephanie Lemeza. She cut inside her defender, put it on her right foot and smacked it to the far post, giving the Utes a 1-0 lead. It was Terry's third goal of the season, tying her for second-most on the squad. Lemeza was credited with her second assist of the year.

LMU tied the game at 1-1 in the 67th minute as Lawson buried a header to the back post after Kelsey Wilson had lofted a cross into the penalty box.

Utah sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Turpen made a game-saving stop with less than one minute on the clock, sending the game into overtime. She made two more saves in the first overtime period as well.

Each team took a total of 14 shots in the contest, with the Lions putting eight on goal to the Utes' six. Corners went 4-2 in LMU's favor, as did fouls, 16-7. Turpen totaled five saves, while Utah also recorded a team save. Clark made four stops between the pipes for LMU

Utah's next contest will be played at one of the best soccer facilities in the nation, as the Utes head to Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, Thursday night for a neutral-site contest against Utah State.
