SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah soccer team (2-0) won its second straight contest, defeating Cal State Fullerton (0-1) by a 3-1 score Sunday on the Titans' home field. Sophomore forward Chelsea Forbes scored the game-winner, finding the back of the net for the second time this season.
"For a team to be successful team it has to play well on the road," said Manning. "I thought we did a good job to battle the elements of a road game and got a great result, I am very pleased. Our commitment to defense and having a `grind-it-out' attitude, where you just move on to the next play, was very good today and we took advantage of a few moments when we were able to break them down. I think the way we've played the first two games is indicative of a positive spirit, attitude and determination, and it's great to see that translate into results right away."
Utah got out to a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute as senior midfielder Kelly Isleib scored her second goal of the season. A failed clearance from the Titan defense fell to Isleib, who took a wide-open shot that found the left side of the goal. Isleib has now tallied two goals and two assists in two games, leading the team with six points.
The Utes carried the one-goal advantage until the 57th minute, when Forbes struck gold to make it 2-0 on what she called a "crazy" goal. Junior forward Lauren Hair received a ball in the box and played a back-heel pass to sophomore midfielder Kellie Woodfield, who played another back-heel that found Forbes, who slotted it home from six yards out. Woodfield now has a goal and an assist on the season.
"It is so great to get the season started like this," said Forbes. "After not scoring a lot last year, to come out and have one in each game so far, feels really good. The whole team is really excited right now that we came out so strong in both games and have scored so many goals. Now we are looking ahead to the next game and hopefully we can keep winning."
Freshman forward Hanna Terry gave the Utes their third goal less than 10 minutes later, beating the goalkeeper one-on-one as Hair slotted her through on the breakaway. It the first goal of Terry's collegiate career and the second assist of the contest for Hair.
Cal State Fullerton scored its lone goal on a penalty kick in the 67th minute, taken by Tamara Dewey. Utah had gone more than 156 consecutive minutes without giving up a goal, to start the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Turpen got the win, improving to 2-0 this year. Apart from the penalty kick, Fullerton tested her just once but she up to the task, making a quality stop to preserve the two-goal victory.
After defeating Utah Valley in their home-opener by a 6-0 tally, the Utes have now combined for nine goals from six different players in only two games. Utah's offensive explosion to start the 2009 campaign is a stark contrast to its sluggish beginning of 2008, when the squad didn't score its ninth goal until its ninth game.
The Utes are back in action Friday, Aug. 28, as they host No. 22-ranked Santa Clara (2-0) at 7:30 p.m. MT at Ute Field.
"I think the whole team is ready to come out hard again for Santa Clara," said Hair. "They are always a good team but we know we can play with them. Hopefully we can play well and grab another win. We have to prepare well this week with intense practices and learn from these wins, just like we learn from our losses."
