SALT LAKE CITY - The 57th-ranked Utah women's tennis team (9-9, 3-2 MWC) heads to Provo to take on 58th-ranked, in-state rival BYU (11-7, 4-1 MWC) at noon on Saturday, April 11, at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts.
"BYU is a school that has dominated us for the last 25 years or so," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "Last year we made a step forward in making this a true rivalry.
"We only have three regular season conference matches left," continued Iandolo. "With NCAA bids and conference tournament seeding on the line, our remaining matches can't help but take on a high level of significance."
Last year the Utes dominated the Cougars, 6-1, at the Eccles Tennis Center. It was the first time since 1992 that Utah had defeated BYU in dual match play.
Juniors Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan helped the Utes win the doubles point with their 8-3 defeat of Dolly Chang and Kristina Doerr at the No. 2 spot.
Senior Leigh Walsh clinched the match for the Utes last year with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Elizaveta Ezhova at the No. 5 position. Senior Karine Bourdages, Monson, and Maughan also contributed to Utah's victory with their singles wins.
The Utes are coming off a tough, 5-2, mid-week road loss to 34th-ranked Denver, and are looking to rebound against the Cougars.
BYU's last action came in a 4-3 loss to 27th-ranked TCU in Texas this past weekend.
