SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (12-6) defeated Loyola Marymount (4-14), 6-1, remaining undefeated on their home courts. Senior Wes Hancock clinched the match for Utah at, 4-0.

"I can't think of a better way to go into our conference matches with our two victories this weekend," said head coach F.D. Robbins."Our guys played tough and took care of business."

In the No. 1 doubles position Phillip Eilers and Wes Hancock won their match against Ivan Lopez and Geza Bazula, 8-6, setting up Benito Suriano and Stephen Jacobs to clinch the match with their win against Renzo Maggi and Nick Von Der Ahe in the No. 3 slot, 8-5.

Timmy Allin and John Taylor closed the Utes' doubles sweep in the No. 2 spot defeating Borja Malet and Aris Andreasian, 9-8(5).

In the No. 6 position Allin defeated Andreasian, 6-2, 6-1. Utah continued their lead with Eilers topping Johan Berhof, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 2 spot setting up Hancock to clinch the match from the No. 1 slot defeating Lopez, 7-6(4), 6-2.

Jason Smits in the No. 5 position downed Bazula in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. The Lions came up with their only point in the match in the No. 4 slot with Malet defeating Taylor, 6-0, 7-6(3).

Freshman Suriano finished his match in the No. 3 position in a tie-breaker and came out with a win over Maggi, 6-7(3), 6-4, 10-3.

The Utes will begin conference play at home on Thursday, April 2 against UNLV beginning at 1 p.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center.
