SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (13-6, 1-0) earned a conference win in their first MWC match of the season. The Utes defeated UNLV (12-9, 1-2), 4-3.
In the No. 1 spot Phillip Eilers and Wes Hancock downed Luca Barlocchi and Elliot Wronski, 8-3, setting up Timmy Allin and John Taylor to clinch the doubles point for the Utes from the No. 2 slot, 8-5, defeating Nikolaj Wulff and Attila Toth.
Benito Suriano and Stephen Jacobs earned the doubles sweep for Utah in the No. 3 position topping Mehdi Bouras and Wesley Burrows, 8-6.
In singles Allin put the Utes up, 2-0, with a win against Nikolaj Wulff, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 6 spot. The Rebels answered with a win in the No. 1 slot, Hancock fell to Wronski, 6-1, 6-3.
With the Utes up, 2-1, Jason Smits in the No. 5 position was defeated by Toth, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, tying the match at, 2-2.
UNLV took the lead from the No. 3 spot Barlocchi defeated Suriano, 7-6, 6-2. Phillip Eilers topped Bouras in the No. 2 position, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, setting Taylor up to clinch the match from the No. 4 slot for the Utes at, 4-3, downing Burrows, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4.
Utah will face BYU tomorrow at the Eccles Tennis Center beginning at 1 p.m.
