COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Utah freshman Whitney Lopus (Scottsdale, Ariz.) competed in the 200 fly on the final day of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday at the Student Recreation Center Natatorium.
Lopus, who broke the 100 fly school record on Friday, finished 27th in the preliminaries with a time of 1:57.17. Lopus' finish wasn't enough to get her into the finals of the event.
"Things didn't go as well as hoped today," said head coach Greg Winslow. "But Whitney got some good experience that will serve her well next season."
At the end of the championships, Lopus' performance put Utah as one of the top 50 of the team standings at the national championships. Lopus earned All-American honors in the 100 fly on Friday, which included her in an elite group of student-athletes as one of only three women in Utah history to earn All-American recognition. Lopus joins Heidi Hausknecht, who was named an All-American in the 100 fly in 1999, and Allison McInturff, who earned All-American honors in the 200 free in 2007.
"It's great for Whitney to be named an All-American, especially in her freshman year," said Winslow. "Having an All-American on the team will help lead Utah to bigger and better things."
Lopus is one of only two swimmers from the Mountain West Conference to be named an All-American this season. The other was UNLV's Zsuzsanna Jakabos. Jakabos was recognized for her eighth-place finish in the 400 IM finals with a time of 4:07.58.
"It was definitely an exciting meet," said Winslow. "We'll be back here next season and Utah will have more athletes competing."
