San Diego, Calif. - The University of Utah men's tennis team (10-6) was defeated by Princeton (7-6), 4-3.
Utah began the day earning the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Wes Hancock and Phillip Eilers defeated Peter Capkovic and Alex Vuckovic, 8-6, and Timmy Allin and John Taylor topped Ryan Kim and Ilya Trubov, 8-6.
Benito Suriano and Stephen Jacobs fell to George Carpeni and Yohei Shoji, 8-5, in the No. 3 spot.
In singles, Princeton tied the match at 1-1 when Kim topped John Taylor, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 4 slot. Wes Hancock was defeated in the No. 1 position by Capkovic, 6-1, 6-1, putting the Tigers up 2-1.
In the No. 6 spot Timmy Allin topped Coleman Crutchfield, 7-5, 7-6(1), tying the match at 2-2. Benito Suriano was defeated by Carpeni in the No. 3 position, 7-5, 6-3, giving Princeton the chance to clench the match when Phillip Eilers tied the match at 3-3 in the No. 2 spot defeating Vuckovic in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
With the possibility for both teams to clinch the match Jason Smits came out with a win in the first set, 6-1, against Alex Faust when Faust came back to win the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2, winning the match for Princeton.
The Utes will be back in action at home against Montana State Friday, March 27 at the Eccles Tennis Center.
