San Diego, Calif.- The No. 60-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (9-5) defeated San Diego (6-12), 5-2, after losing to USD, 7-0, last year.

"It's our first good win at sea level and a really good win overall," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "It is the first time in a long time that we beat USD on their home court. Our guys battled really hard and earned themselves a really good win."

Wes Hancock and Phillip Eilers clinched the doubles point for the Utes topping Nils Schive and Dean Jackson, 9-8(10), coming from behind with five match points against them.

The other Ute duo contributing a win to the doubles point was Benito Suriano and Stephen Jacobs defeating Tom Wolff and Juan Devillier, 8-5, in the No. 3 spot. Timmy Allin and John Taylor fell to Nikola Bubnic and Charl Wolmarans in the No. 2 position, 9-8.

In singles, Allin in the No. 6 position put Utah up 2-0 in the match topping Jose Manuel Munoz, 6-2, 6-2. Jason Smits continued the Utes lead adding another point defeating Devillier in two straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 5 spot.

Phillip Eilers was defeated in the No. 2 position by Nico Bubnic, 6-3, 7-5, which gave USD their first point in the match.

Hancock in the No. 1 slot defeated Wolmarans in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, clinching the match for Utah.

In the No. 3 position Suriano defeated Wolff, 6-4, 7-5. Nils Schive gave USD their second point topping Taylor in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, in the No. 4 spot.

The Utes next match against Yale (9-3) beings tomorrow at 11 a.m. in San Diego.
