BOISE, Idaho- The No. 68-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (6-4) defeated Idaho (7-4), 4-3, Friday, ending a four game losing streak on the road.

"We didn't play a good match today, but came up with a much needed win," said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. "Phillip played a good match at #2 and Wes played a fantastic first set, but unfortunately couldn't hold on for a win. Besides that I don't think anybody played good. But, the positive thing is that we came up with our first win on the road. We are now 6-4 and we haven't played our best tennis yet. We just need to keep working hard and keep going at it and good things will happen. We can only play better than we are right now."

The Utes started strong with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions capturing the doubles point. Wes Hancock and Phillip Eilers teamed up in the No. 1 slot to defeat Artem Kuznetsov and Alexandru Joitoiu, 8-4. In the No. 2 spot, John Taylor and Timmy Allin topped Robert Chalkley and Timothy Huynh, 8-5. Stephen Jacobs and Benito Suriano fell to Alan Shin and Stanislav Glukhov, 8-6, in the No. 3 position.

With a 1-0 lead over the Vandals, the Utes fought hard to clench the match in singles. Phillip Eilers at the No. 2 position defeated Glukhov in two sets, 6-4, 6-3. In the No. 5 spot Jason Smits earned a point for the Utah topping Huynh, 6-4, 6-3, with Allin adding another point for the Utes defeating Shin, 6-4, 7-5, in the No. 6 position.

Hancock in the No. 1 spot won his first set against Artem Kuznetsov, 6-2, falling in the second and third set, 6-4, 6-1. In the No. 3 position Taylor was defeated by Joitoiu, 6-1, 6-3, and Suriano fell to Chalkley, 5-2, 3-6, 10-5, in the no. 4 spot.

The Utes remain in Boise to face No. 29 Boise State (6-4) Saturday.
