SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 68-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (5-3) fell to No. 61-ranked UC Santa Barbara (3-4), 5-2, Friday.
Utah started out strong with by winning the doubles point with a pair of wins. Wes Hancock and Phillip Eilers at the No. 1 spot topped Alex Konigsfeldt and Josh Finkelstein, 9-8. Timmy Allin and John Taylor at the No. 2 position defeated Scott Hohenstein and Jurgenson, 8-3. Putting the Utes up 1-0 over the Gachos
Benito Suriano and Stephen Jacobs, at the No. 3 position, fell toTaylor Chavez-Goggin, 8-5.
The Utes put up a tough fight in singles but came out winning only one singles point. The only Ute to win in a singles match was Hancock when he defeated Hohenstein at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-0.
At the No. 1 spot Konigsfeldt defeated Eilers, 7-5, 6-3. Max Taylor beat Othman Zerouali-Ouariti in two sets, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 3 position.
Taylor lost the first set at the No. 4 spot against Finkelstein, 6-2, he came back to win the second set, 1-6, and fell in the third, 6-4. At the No. 5 position Jacobs also took his match with Chavez-Goggin to three sets winning the first set, 4-6, Chavez-Goggin came back to win the next two, 6-3, 6-1.
Corbin Benson won his first set, 4-6, in the No. 6 position against Devin Nerenberg when Nerenberg returned with two wins, 7-6, 6-1.
The Utes will remain on the road for their next match against UC Irvine, Sunday Feb. 22.
