ALBUQUERQUE - Utah overcame a six-point deficit with less than two minutes remaining to defeat New Mexico, 53-50, and remain undefeated in the Mountain West Conference and solidify their hold on first-place.
Down six, 48-42, after Amanda Adamson hit two free-throws with 2:13 left, Katie King completed a three-point play after being fouled on a layup and making the subsequent free-throw to cut the lead to three. Although New Mexico's Amy Beggin hit a layup at the other end of the floor to bring the lead back up to five (50-45), it was all Utah in the final minute of the game.
King began the rally with a jumper with 55 seconds left. Morgan Warburton caused a turnover with a big heads-up play to get the ball back and Kalee Whipple tied the game with a three-point basket with 37 seconds left. After Beggin missed a jumper for UNM, Warburton pulled down the rebound and on the other end of the floor, hit a flying three-point basket with six seconds left to give Utah the lead.
King blocked Angela Hartill's desperation three-pointer at the end of the game.
Warburton led Utah with 18 points and 14 rebounds - her third double-double of the year. Whipple was also in double figure scoring with 12 points and King had 11. Whipple, King and Halie Sawyer each had two blocks and Whipple had two steals.
The Utes shot 44.7-percent in the defensive minded contest.
Although Utah held as much as a six-point lead early in the game after a 6-0 run with points from Whipple, King and Warburton for a 14-8 lead with 13:36 remaining, the Utes struggled late in the half and were held scoreless in the final 7:14. New Mexico ended the half on a 9-0 run that was capped by a three-point bucket from Sarah Halasz to take the lead, 27-21.
Utah opened the second half strong and chipped away at the Lobo lead. The Utes took their first lead of the half, 40-39, with 6:22 remaining on a King layup after outscoring New Mexico 19-12 through that point with six points from Warburton and four from Whipple. However, the Lobos came back to score the next six points to retake the lead, 46-40, with 4:11 left before Utah's final run for the win.
Head coach Elaine Elliott earned her 550th win in the contest.
