LOUISVILLE - Four players scored in double figures as the Utah women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 25 Louisville, 60-55 in Kentucky on Sunday, Dec. 6.
Kalee Whipple led Utah with 16 points while Taryn Wicijowski tallied 15. Janita Badon scored 12 points with a team- and career-high eight rebounds. Halie Sawyer added 10 points.
"Our kids competed exceptionally hard," head coach Elaine Elliott said. "We could have pulled out the `W.' We are so far from executing and understanding the things that we need to understand, and we were right there. I am proud of them."
Utah (4-4) struggled early in the game, allowing Louisville (5-2) to go up by as many as seven points, 18-11 with six minutes left in the half. Although the Utes were getting open looks, their shots weren't falling.
Utah kept at it and rallied late in the first half. With five minutes remaining, the Utes went on a tear to outscore the Cardinals, 18-2, to take a 28-22 lead at halftime. Whipple led the run with eight points for the Utes while the team was 5-of-6 from the floor during the stretch. Badon had six rebounds at halftime.
The Utes stayed in front through the first 10 minutes of the second half, holding their lead by as many as six points. With Utah up 42-36 with 10:10 remaining, the Cardinals went on a 13-1 run through 5:30 left to take a six-point lead of their own, 49-43, which they would hold the rest of the game. Utah came within three points down the stretch, but could not rally in the final minutes.
Becky Burke led Louisville with 20 points. Statistically, the two teams had similar numbers, with Utah averaging 40-percent shooting compared to 39.2-percent for Louisville. The Cardinals just edged the Utes in rebounds, 36-32.
Louisville is ranked 25th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll.
The Utes slow down for the next two weeks as they reach the end of the semester to play just two games, both at home, taking on in-state NAIA rival Westminster on Saturday, Dec. 12, before South Dakota State comes in on Dec. 19.
