Last season, the Utah women defeated Boise State twice over a two-day period, 175-66 and 197-84. Edge, Caron and junior Maiya Otsuka (Littleton, Colo.) are the top returners from that meet for Utah. Edge finished first in the 50 free (23.59), Caron was first in the 100 free (51.23) and Otsuka got the top spot in the 100 breast (1:06.99) on the first day. Caron finished first in the 200 free (1:51.54) and the 200 IM (2:06.74) on the second day, with Otsuka repeating her first-place finish in the 100 breast (1:07.06) as well as finishing first in the 200 breast (2:22.20).
The Utah women defeated New Mexico 158-84 in their last meeting, with the Utes finishing first in 11 of 13 events during the meet.
This will be the first meeting for both Utah men and women against Seattle.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Greg Winslow
"Boise State is a much improved team this year. They have a young team with a lot of talent."
"New Mexico will have some tough sprint free swimmers. They also have a strong diving program that will challenge our young team."
"We have to get better at the details. We have to be aggressive from the start of a meet and have to swim with confidence. With those things in place, we'll see a lot more success."
"Maiya [Otsuka] could have a great weekend. I'm excited to see if Ellis [Walters] can perform even better without the pressure of qualifying for zones. Eric Murray is coming into his own this season and I'm excited to see what he's going to do against Seattle this weekend."
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Boise State defeated a Pacific-10 Conference team for the first time, getting a win against Washington State, 178-116, on Oct. 17. Stephanie North will be tough in the sprint free events, getting wins in the 50 free (24.35) and 100 free (52.63) against WSU. Emily Irvin will also be tough in the breast events, taking both the 100 (1:05.81) and 200 breast (2:22.55) against the Cougars.
The New Mexico Lobos are 2-2 this season, getting wins over Air Force and Northern Colorado, but falling to San Diego State and Colorado State. The Lobo's diving team, led by Ashlee Erickson and Aubrey Bush, swept the top spots against Air Force, SDSU and CSU. Jennifer Patterson also got the win in the 100 fly (58.03) in the meet.
Seattle University split its last meet against University of the Pacific, with the men winning 127-79 and the women losing 111-94.
