STILLWATER, Okla. - The University of Utah soccer team (8-9-2) took a 3-0 loss at Oklahoma State (12-7-0) Thursday in a late-season non-conference contest. All three of Utah's attempts on goal came from freshman forward Hanna Terry, who took a game-high eight total shots.
Oklahoma State got out to an early 1-0 lead as Carson Michalowski buried a header off a Bridget Miller corner kick just 8:47 into the game. Just over one minute later, OSU scored on another header as Annika Niemeier made it a 2-0 Cowgirl advantage from eight yards out off a Kasey Langdon cross.
The Utes found their form and competed hard through halftime and into the 60th minute, but Oklahoma State's Miller came up with a loose ball in the Utah box and struck it to the far post from 12 yards out to make in 3-0 for the Cowgirls.
"I think it's always important to play good teams and this was one of them," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "They have some dynamic attacking players and this was a good reminder for us of the things we have to be able to do well come conference tournament time. Clearly we must defend our set pieces better, communicate well on the field and be more committed to keeping the ball. I think those are little things that we can clean up, but at the same time this has been a recurring pattern this season. These things tend to cause us problems and we have to get on top of them if are going to reach our goals.
"I thought after we fell behind we actually played pretty well and gave ourselves a chance to get back in the game," Manning continued. "We were a little unlucky not to do that. The positives are that a lot of players got on the field tonight and there were some good individual performances. Now we just have to regroup and get ready to finish strong Saturday strong Saturday on Senior Day."
Utah kept it close statistically, being outshot 14-12, with shots on goal going 4-3. Corner kicks were 5-2 for OSU, while fouls went 15-11 against the Utes. Utah sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Turpen made three saves, while OSU's Adrianna Franch made two and Keely Kippenberger made one, to combine for the shutout.
Utah wraps up the regular season on Senior Day Saturday at Ute Field against MWC foe Air Force at 1 p.m. MT. The Utes can finish anywhere from third to fifth place, pending the weekend's results from around the conference.
