The Utah women's team has not competed against Arizona State since the 1998-99 season, as it fell to the Sun Devils, 160-74. This will be the second time that head coach Greg Winslow has faced off against his former team. In the last meeting in 2007, the Utah men's team lost to ASU, 184-110.
QUOTING COACH WINSLOW
"It will be good to see Arizona State this week. I helped recruit a lot of the athletes on the team. It will be nice to see them and see some of the coaches I worked with down there."
"We'll be relying on those that won last week to continue to do well. We'll be looking to the freshmen that won, particularly Ryan Hansen and Bryan Michaels, to continue to step up for us. We have only begun to see what Karson Applin can do in the pool."
"I was really impressed with Kristina Evans last week. We will need her to continue to compete at that level to stay with our opponents this week."
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
The UNLV men were voted as the preseason favorite to win the MWC for 2009-10. UNLV returns almost every member of its five 2009 record-setting MWC relays as well as returning five individual champions, including distance swimmer Kier Maitland, the 2009 MWC Swimmer of the Year.
The UNLV women were picked to finish second overall in the MWC. The Rebels return two individual champions in Marva Harpak, the 2009 MWC 200 free champion and Ana Dangalakova, the MWC 200 back champion.
At the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in 2009, ASU finished 18th on the men's side and 17th on the women's. The Sun Devils return NCAA Honorable Mention All-American in Jess Perazzo, who was honored for her part in the 200 and 400 free relay.
