SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah soccer team (8-8-2, 3-2-1 MWC) heads east this week for a non-conference tilt at Oklahoma State (11-7-0, 5-5-0 Big 12), Thursday at 6 p.m. MT. The Utes then return to Ute Field for Senior Day on Saturday, as they play their final regular-season game against Air Force (2-14-1, 0-6-0 MWC). Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. MT.
The All-Time Series...
Utah will meet Oklahoma State for the first time Thursday. Against Air Force, the Utes are a perfect 11-0 all-time, including a 5-0 mark in Salt Lake City. In their last meeting, Utah topped the Falcons, 2-1, on their home field. In 2007, the last time they played at Ute Field, the U. needed overtime to take down Air Force by a 2-1 score.
Scouting The Opposition...
Oklahoma State - The Cowgirls' are riding a four-game winning streak, including three straight victories at home. OSU and Utah have faced three common opponents this year. Oklahoma State fared slightly better, losing to BYU and Colorado but defeating Utah State, while the Utes lost to all three, twice falling in overtime.
Offensively, Annika Niemeier leads the Cowgirls with eight goals and four assists for 20 points. Five other players have netted four goals apiece, including Siera Strawser and Kendall Treadwell, who have also added three assists each.
On the defensive end, Adrianna Franch has played most of the OSU minutes between the pipes, allowing just 11 goals and making 49 saves. She boasts a goals-against-average of 0.66 and a save percentage of .817, with eight shutouts to her credit. She also combined with Keely Kippenberger on two additional shared shutouts.
Oklahoma State is led by head coach Colin Carmichael, who has been with the program in some capacity since its inception. Including a two-year stint as the co-head coach in 2005 and 2006, Carmichael is now 70-23-13 in his four-years at the helm.
Air Force - The Falcons have fought through a difficult year with several close losses. Still searching for their first conference win since 2003, four of their six MWC losses this year have come by 1-0 scores. In all, Air Force has lost eight games this season by a one-goal margin.
The Falcons' leading scorer is Stephanie Patterson, who has accounted for two goals and three assists, for seven points. Kelly Bieber and Bridgett Murphy have also scored twice, while four other players have found the back of the net once. In conference play, Patterson has the Falcons' only goal, scored in a 3-1 loss to Wyoming, on an assist from Bieber.
Defensively, Charity Blanton and Ariana Green have split time in goal. Blanton has played in 11 games, starting all of them, while Green has made nine appearances with six starts. The Falcons have allowed 32 goals on the year, giving up 1.85 per game, with 20 going against Blanton and 12 against Green.
Air Force is led by first-year head coach Larry Friend, only the second head coach in the school's 17-year soccer history.
Utes Lock Up 11th Straight MWC Tournament Berth...
With its 2-1 win at Wyoming last weekend, the Utes assured themselves of no worse than a fifth-place finish and can reach as high as third with a win this weekend against Air Force. In the 11-year history of the MWC Tournament, the Utes have never failed to qualify. The top six finishers of the eight league teams make the conference championship field.
Utah's Last Time Out...
Utah recovered from a 1-0 deficit to score twice and capture a 2-1 victory at Wyoming last Saturday. It was the first time all year that Utah had fallen behind but come back to win. Senior midfielder Kelly Isleib (Park City, Utah) tallied her third game-winner of the season on a 35-yard strike with just under 12 minutes remaining in the contest.
In the 79th minute with the game tied 1-1, Isleib took a pass from freshman defender Natalie Young (Springville, Utah), took a couple dribbles to the middle and belted a right-footed shot from 35 yards out that found the upper right corner of the Wyoming net to give Utah a 2-1 lead, and the eventual game-winner. Most of Isleib's seven goals this year have come from more than 20 yards out.
Junior forward Lauren Hair (Alpine, Utah) had erased a 1-0 second-half deficit with a goal of her own in the 63rd minute.
Freshmen Account For Three Assists At Wyoming...
In Utah's 2-1 come-from-behind win at Wyoming last Saturday, both of the Utes' goals were set up by freshmen. Young sent the eventual game-winning ball over to Isleib in the 79th minute for her second helper of the year. On the game-tying goal from Hair, it was midfielder Allie Wisner (Bozeman, Mont.) and midfielder Zoe Van Gorder (Park City, Utah) who played her in.
Forward Hanna Terry (Park City, Utah) is tied for second on the squad with 11 points on five goals and one assist. In the 3-1 victory over TCU, she became the first freshman to register at least five goals in a season since Adele Letro scored seven in 2005.
With five of the seven freshmen on the roster logging at least one goal or assist, the class as a whole has accounted for eight scores and seven helpers (23 points), or roughly 29% of the team's total offense. All seven have seen significant playing time with Terry, Wisner, Van Gorder, and Stephanie Lemeza (Mississauga, Ontario) all cracking the starting lineup.
Defensive Trends...
Utah has held its opponents scoreless on five occasions this year, going 5-0 in those contests. When allowing at least one goal, Utah's record drops to 3-8-2.
Threatening From Everywhere...
Utah has now scored 28 goals on the year with 10 different players finding the back of the net. The Utes have had offensive production from all over the field, evidenced by the following goal breakdown by position: forward (16), holding midfield (8), center back (2), attacking midfield (1) and outside back (1). Utah has gotten multiple goals from six players, while four others have lit up the scoreboard once.
Manning Notches 100th Career Victory As Utes Shut Out Princeton...
Manning earned his 100th career win with the 2-0 victory against Princeton, all of which have come at Utah. Averaging more than 13.5 wins per year over his previous seven years, Manning looks to become only the second MWC coach ever to hit the century mark, joining BYU's Jennifer Rockwood.
Utah Picks Up First Ranked Win Since 2007...
With the 1-0 victory against No. 19-ranked Santa Clara on Aug. 28, Utah registered its first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 16 BYU in Provo, 1-0, in October of 2007. It was the Utes' first victory over a ranked opponent at home since defeating No. 15 BYU, 1-0, in October of 2006.
Utes Tie For Second In Preseason MWC Poll...
Utah has been selected second in the MWC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Utes are predicted to finish behind BYU, who received 49 points and seven of eight first-place votes to capture the top spot. TCU received the only other first-place vote in the poll.
San Diego State and UNLV were predicted to finish in fourth and fifth place with 30 and 28 points, respectively. New Mexico was ranked sixth (18 points), while Wyoming (14 points) and Air Force (7 points) rounded out the top eight.
Utah's Mountain West Conference History...
Utah captured its first conference title in 1999, the inaugural year of the MWC. The Utes were named co-champions as they finished in a three-way tie with San Diego State and BYU.
Utah's next league title came in 2003, as the Utes swept both the MWC regular-season and tournament championships. Utah went undefeated in conference play for the first time in school history, posting a 6-0-0 record. The Utes then topped BYU by a 2-0 score in the tournament championship match, held in Salt Lake City. The successful 2003 campaign kicked off a string of four straight years in which either the regular season or conference tournament hardware would rest in the Utes' trophy case at season's end.
In 2004, Utah won its second consecutive MWC Tournament championship, advancing past San Diego State in the finals. The match was tied 1-1 following regulation and overtime play, but the Utes eventually conquered the Aztecs in penalty kicks to claim the title.
The 2005 season saw Utah finish atop the MWC standings in the regular season, posting another undefeated conference record at 6-0-1.
With another flawless year in 2006, registering a 7-0-0 record, Utah joined BYU as the only two programs in the MWC's history to post back-to-back unbeaten seasons. Utah and BYU also share the distinction of being the two most successful soccer programs in MWC history. Utah has captured either the regular-season or conference tournament championship five times, while BYU has claimed a title eight times. Both squads have also twice doubled up to sweep both titles in the same year.
From the Mind of Manning...
On this week's games against Oklahoma State and Air Force:
"There are a few important outcomes from going to Oklahoma State that can benefit our squad. First, we get to play against a really good team. Second, we will see a different style of play than we do in the MWC. And third, we can test out some new ideas and try some different players out. OSU is a really good team, that is the kind of squad we could see in the MWC Tournament or the NCAA Tournament. There is a lot of good value in this game for us.
"Air Force has a lot of new players but I think they play with the same committment and enthusiasm that their previous teams have played with. They are hard workers on defense that tackle well and give a great second effort. They don't give you a lot of time on the ball. Offensively they do the same thing, they get up field and pressure you."
On last week's win at Wyoming and the team's mentality:
"I think a lot of the positives that came out of Saturday's game are from a mental standpoint. We won a close game, we came from behind late in the game and we did so in tough conditions. To be able to persevere and triumph in that setting was a big step for this young team.
"Our players were talking at practice about how we did a great job of managing the last 10 minutes of that game. We kept our composure and created chances in different ways. I think the confidence we gained from that game comes from taking the experiences we have gone through this season and making improvements that helped us be successful."
