SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah soccer team (7-8-2, 2-2-1 MWC) fell to New Mexico (11-3-2, 3-2-0) by a 1-0 score at Ute Field Sunday night. The Utes were undone by a corner kick that was curled directly into the goal.
"Congratulations to New Mexico, they executed their gameplan to perfection," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "That was to limit our chances and capitalize on one or two of their own, and they did that. I think we played a fairly good game. New Mexico doesn't give up many goals so when you go behind a team like that, it's very difficult to come back."
With the game tied at 0-0 and just under 37 minutes to play, Jennifer Williams made herself the Ute fans' villain. The Lobos' leading scorer with 10 goals, she struck a right-footed corner kick that bent just inside the near post for the game's only damage on the scoreboard.
Utah had several looks at goal but was unable to convert, narrowly missing on several occasions. The Utes had two clean headers sail just over the crossbar, while another rang the framework. Kelli Cornell made six saves in the Lobo net, including a nearly point-blank stop on Utah's leading scorer, Kelly Isleib. Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Turpen made one save for the Utes.
Utah outshot New Mexico 16-9 overall, with shots on goal going 6-2 for the Utes. Corner kicks also went 7-2 in their favor, while fouls went 11-9 against New Mexico. Each team was awarded a yellow card.
Utah gets back to action Saturday, Oct. 24, as the Utes travel to Laramie, Wyo. to take on Wyoming. The only remaining home game for Utah is the season finale against Air Force on Oct. 31.
