EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Utah soccer team (1-4-0) dropped another very close contest on a late goal, falling to Oregon (2-2-0) by a 3-2 score. Utah's goals came from senior midfielder Katy Reineke (Salt Lake City) and junior midfielder Kelly Isleib (Park City, Utah), who netted their first and third goals of the season, respectively.
"I thought once again our team showed good character and resiliency," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "We came from behind to tie it and then we hung in there against a furious attack in the second half. I was really proud of that. We played well in stretches, but there are definitely areas we have to continue to improve on. The thing that sticks out for me was that this game was a test of emotional strength and control. We were on top of the game, they got scored on a counter-attack and that knocked us off our feet a little bit, but we bounced back very well. It's really about being determined and finding a way to get back in the game. We are still developing our competitive muscles within the team and tonight was a good test for that."
With the score tied at 2-2 in the 83rd minute of play, Oregon would take advantage of corner kick, finding the back of the net for a 3-2 lead. After the corner was played in, two Oregon players were able to get a head and a foot on it, eventually playing it to Newton. Newton was able to slide it past Rogers from five yards out, putting the Ducks on top.
The Ducks drew the game's first blood in the 10th minute of play when Jen Stoltenberg buried a header off of a cross from Allison Newton. Newton had managed to dribble from midfield all the way down the left side, playing the cross in to Newton who had just squeezed to the inside of her defender.
Utah then leveled the score at 1-1 in the 31st minute as senior midfielder Katy Reineke (Salt Lake City) struck gold on a penalty kick that was earned by sophomore forward Lauren Hair (Alpine, Utah). A long ball had been played to Hair down the right side, where she ran onto it, dribbled into the Oregon penalty box and was taken down from behind by a Duck defender. Reineke was selected to take the spot kick and found her mark, despite Oregon goalkeeper Cody Miles getting a hand to it. The goal marked Reineke's first of the season. The penalty was also the first awarded to Utah in 2008.
Just over six minutes later the Utes lit up the scoreboard again, this time off the foot of junior midfielder Kelly Isleib (Park City, Utah), the team's leading scorer. After drawing another Oregon foul, Isleib stepped up to take the free kick from approximately 22 yards out. Her first attempt rebounded off the wall and fell right back to her, where she one-timed a right-footed gem into the upper left corner of the net. Isleib's third goal of the year gave Utah a 2-1 lead.
The first half scoring was still not finished however, as Oregon found the back of the net just three minutes later to even up the score at 2-2. After Utah's junior goalkeeper Emalee Rogers (Centerville, Utah) made a terrific point-blank save, the rebound fell auspiciously to Oregon's Mercedes Walters, who put it away from just a few yards out.
Despite giving up three goals, Rogers had a career day in net, making seven saves in the contest to keep the Utes' hopes alive. Utah was outshot overall, 25-12, with shots on goal going 10-6 in the Ducks' favor. Utah earned four corner kicks to Oregon's three, while fouls went 12-8 against OU. Each team was shown two yellow cards in the match.
Utah gets back into action Sunday as the Utes take the short trip to Corvallis, Oregon, to face Oregon State (2-1-0). OSU was not in action Friday.
Utah's next home contest will be Friday, Sept. 12, as the Utes host in-state rival Utah State. The team will celebrate U.S. Youth Soccer Night as the Utes team up with the United States Youth Soccer Assocation (USYSA). Both teams will be available to sign autographs on the field following the game.
