SEATTLE, Wash. - The University of Utah soccer team (3-6-2) saw its four-match unbeaten run come to an end with a 3-0 loss at Washington (8-1-0) Friday.
"We have to give full credit to Washington for playing a terrific game and coming out with a ton of energy," said head coach Rich Manning. They wore us down all over the field. For our part, I don't think it was one of our better performances. This is another important opportunity to learn some lessons about playing better together, playing on the road, and bringing the kid of effort we are going to need to be successful once conference play starts. Now we will just lick our wounds and try to go out and be better Sunday at Cal Poly."
Washington got on the board in the 28th minute of play as leading scorer Veronica Perez buried a header off of a Kellye Joswick corner kick. Just 41 seconds later, UW's McKenna Waitley made it a 2-0 as Utah junior goalkeeper Emalee Rogers (Centerville, Utah) made a diving save that rebounded to Waitley's feet, giving her an open-net opportunity.
Washington scored its third goal in the 57th minute of play as the Huskies got on the end of another corner kick, scoring their second headball goal of the contest. Once again it was Joswick and Perez hooking up for the goal, but this time in reverse order, as Joswick hit the header off the corner attempt from Perez.
Utah struggled to get its offense going, unable to produce a shot on goal until the second half. The Utes were outshot 19-3 overall, with shots on goal going 9-2 against them. Utah allowed 14 corner kicks while earning only two of their own. UW committed 14 fouls to Utah's 10.
Senior goalkeeper Amy Edman (Salt Lake City) saw her first action of the season, taking over for Rogers with 12:12 remaining in the contest. Rogers finished with five saves. Edman kept the Huskies from doing further damage, making a diving save to her right following a 15-yard Washington shot.
The Utes will be back in action Sunday as they head to San Luis Obispo, Calif., for a 2 p.m. matchup against Cal Poly. Utah's next home game will be Saturday, Oct. 4, as the Utes host in-state rival BYU at 7 p.m.
