COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Junior goalkeeper Emalee Rogers (Centerville, Utah) of the University of Utah women's soccer team has been named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
"Emalee was solid in both of our games over the weekend," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "She really kept the team organized and poised in a tight overtime game Sunday. Emalee continues to improve each weekend with more game experience. It is nice to see someone who has worked so hard in our program for a few years have success and see her hard work pay off, not only for Emalee but for the team as a whole."
Rogers kept back-to-back clean sheets over the weekend, recording her first two shutouts of the year. She made five saves in a 2-0 victory against Utah State Friday night, then made three more in a double-overtime 0-0 draw on the road Sunday at Loyola Marymount.
"I think I am playing with a lot of confidence right now," said Rogers. "I worked really hard in the offseason on everything the coaches asked me to. But I really can't take individual credit for this award, it is really all about the way we are playing as a team. The back four in front of me has really improved and made my job easier. They are communicating well and doing a good job of coming together as a unit."
With her eight total saves in 200 minutes of action, Rogers dropped her season goals-against-average more than half a point, improving from 2.07 to 1.53 following Sunday's scoreless tie.
"I think it shows a lot of character on the part of Emalee and the team as well," said Manning. "After some disappointing early results where we gave up some preventable goals, they have bounced back, straightened out some problems and shown good improvement."
Rogers is the first Ute soccer player to earn conference honors in 2008. She and the rest of the Utah squad is back in action this weekend as they take on Long Beach State at home Friday night at 7:30 p.m., then host No. 21 Cal State Fullerton Sunday at 1 p.m.
