LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of Utah soccer team (2-5-1) played to a 0-0 draw at Loyola-Marymount Sunday. The Utes recorded their second consecutive shutout while playing in their fourth overtime contest of the season.
"I was really please with the way we played today," said head coach Rich Manning. "We came out with energy and put forth a good effort. One of our goals was to have more energy and enthusiasm today than we did for the last couple of Sunday games and the team showed a lot of resolve in doing so.
"We weren't as precise around the goal as we could have been but we are looking a lot more settled in the back," Manning continued. "We are getting some rhythm with our defensive players and I feel like we are starting to look like a team." always the last piece is being clean and dynamic going forward. Regardless of the result, it was nice to put on a good performance and outwork the other team in back-to-back games."
Utah was statistically dominant in the match, outshooting LMU 19-9 overall, with shots on goal going 9-3 in the Utes' favor. Utah earned seven corner kicks to the Lions' two, while LMU committed 10 fouls to the Utes' eight.
Utah's junior goalkeeper Emalee Rogers (Centerville, Utah) is credited with back-to-back shutouts and her first two clean sheets of the year. She now owns three career shutouts. Rogers made three saves in the contest, giving her a weekend total of eight stops. Her LMU counterpart, Allyssa Clark, stopped eight Utah shots and the Lions were credited with a team save as well.
"We talked as a team last night about coming out fired up ready to go," said Rogers. "I think we definitely did that. We have to prove to ourselves and the rest of league that we can compete with the high-caliber teams we are going up against. To do that, we have to have a lot of energy and fire, and come ready to play.
"We are always happy to earn a shutout," added Rogers. "The defense in front of me has been playing awesome. Lauren (Porter) and Lauren (Dudley) are communicating very well with our midfielders to make sure we aren't getting caught out of position. Morgan (Skeen) and Nicole (Cardon) are doing a great job of reading the plays, getting forward, and giving us more options on the attack. I think it is really coming together, we have played much better in the last couple of games and I expect we will only continue to improve."
The Utes have now earned their first back-to-back shutouts since Oct. 3 and Oct. 6 of 2007.
Utah is now 1-2-1 on the year in overtime matches and 15-6-15 all-time in contests requiring extra time.
Utah soccer gets back in action at home Friday, Sept. 19, as the Utes' host Long Beach State at Ute Field. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
