SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team will host 10 dual matches at the Eccles Tennis Center this spring, according to the schedule released by the team Wednesday. The Utes will also play host to the ITA Central Regional Championships in October.
"We are excited about this year's schedule and I feel that we have been able to upgrade it considerably," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "My philosophy and the philosophy of our program from this point forth, is that in order to be the best you must compete against the best. Additionally, you have to be able to get them to come to your home venue. We want to be in a situation with our schedule where if we win 60% of our matches, we will have a chance at making the NCAA tournament, and we have tried to put that together this year."
The ITA Central Region Championships will be held October 18-22 as individual singles and doubles competitors from across the region try to qualify for November's ITA National Indoor Championships. That event will be held at the University of Virginia, Nov. 6-9.
Utah's first action of the year will come at the BYU Invitational in Provo, Sept. 18-20. The Utes' will also participate in several other fall tournaments, including the Boise Invitational in Boise, Idaho, and the ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
The first home dual match for Utah will be played Jan. 22 against 2008 NCAA Tournament participant Washington State. Additionally, the Utes will host NCAA Tournament competitors Washington (Jan. 23) and Notre Dame (Feb. 22). Other notable non-conference contests include matches at Miami (Jan. 31) and Denver (April 8), both of whom made last year's NCAA field.
"It will be great to have Notre Dame come in and play us here," said Iandolo. "Having teams like Washington, Washington State and Boise State coming to the Eccles Tennis Center as part of our non-conference slate is a big plus as well. In the National Team Indoor qualifying, we will play at Miami, followed by either Tennessee or Virginia, so we pick up two more high-caliber matches there. That weekend should go a long way to helping us find out exactly where we stand at that stage of the season and hopefully toughen us up for the rest of the year."
Utah opens Mountain West Conference play at home against Colorado State, March 27. The Utes will have to hit the road to take on defending regular-season MWC champions TCU, April 3, before facing rival BYU in Provo, April 11. Following that contest, Utah heads to Las Vegas to challenge defending MWC Tournament champions UNLV, April 17.
This year's MWC Championships will be held April 22-25, in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Utes are looking to build on a 15-8 campaign 2007-08, Iandolo's first year at the helm for Utah, which placed them fourth in the MWC.
