SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team earned a No. 56 national ranking this week from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) after a 6-1 domination over 47th-ranked BYU last weekend. Elizabeth Ferris is now 60th in the country in singles and 38th in the nation in doubles play with Emily Kwok.
The Utes defended their home courts last Saturday against the Cougars from down south. Utah broke through a sixteen year losing streak, earning their first victory over BYU since 1992. The Cougars were previously ranked 40th in the nation before the Utes pulled out the upset.
The Ute squad finished out the regular season with a 14-8 dual record and went 5-3 in conference play. Utah will head into the Mountain West Conference Tournament this week as the No. 4 seed facing the No. 5 seed BYU.
Ferris, a senior and native to Anaheim, Calif., dropped in the rankings this week after falling to No. 53 Anastasia Surkova of BYU last week. The Ute was previously ranked 54th in the nation. Ferris has accumulated a 29-11 overall record as she heads into the conference tournament.
In doubles play, Ferris and Kwok earned a No. 38 national ranking this week from the ITA. The Ute took on BYU's Surkova and Elizaveta Ezhova at the top spot last week for an 8-6 victory.
