SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team, currently 63rd in the country, celebrates Saturday after a big 6-1 upset over arch rivals 40th ranked BYU. The Utes earned the doubles point and stayed on the high road to take five more wins in singles play before the Cougars had anything to say. The Utes end the season with a 14-8 record after going 5-3 in conference play.
"This is a tremendous win for our program," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "I have tremendous respect for Craig [Manning] on how he has run his program. It is hard to call this a rivalry since it has been so one-sided in the past, but hopefully this is a good sign of things to come."
This marks the first time since 1992 that the women's tennis team has defeated BYU. During that year the women clinched a 5-4 win and the men's tennis team earned a 5-1 victory over the Cougars.
The Utes opened up the tennis match with a tribute to seniors Elizabeth Ferris, Emily Kwok, and Cheyenne Reveche. Iandolo thanked each player for their contributions over the past year with him and their leadership throughout their careers at the U.
The Utes came out ready to defend their home courts in doubles play on Saturday. Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan stepped in at the No. 2 spot to faced Dolly Chang and Kristina Doerr from BYU. The Ute duo pulled ahead right from the start to lead 5-1 over the Cougars. Maughan and Monson only allowed two more games before shutting them down 8-3.
At the top spot, 41st ranked Ferris and Kwok took on Anastasia Surkova and Elizaveta Ezhova. The Ute duo took a 3-0 lead, but the Cougar duo came back to tie things up 3-3. Ferris and Kwok stayed strong and played smart to take the lead once again. They continued their momentum to finish out with an 8-6 victory over the Cougar duo to give Utah the doubles point. Ferris and Kwok finished out regular season play on Saturday with a 17-4 doubles record.
At No. 3 doubles, Leigh Walsh and Karine Bourdages battled against Chie Hayasaka and Elle Carney from BYU. The duos went game for game at the start, but the Cougars went on a solid run despite Walsh and Bourdages' valiant efforts. Hayasaka and Carney took the win 8-3.
With a 1-0 lead, the Utes prepared to continue their winning momentum in singles play. Bourdages finished up first for Utah at the No. 5 spot against Chang. The Cougar started out with a 2-1 lead, but the Ute came back fighting to win five straight games to take the set. In the second set, Bourdages didn't allow a single game to the Cougar. The Ute defeated Chang 6-2, 6-0 to give Utah a 2-0 lead.
At the No. 2 spot, Kwok played her last home match in front of Utah's fans. The Ute took on 112th ranked Doerr from BYU. Kwok came out with a 2-1 lead and just kept on firing shots that the Cougar couldn't answer. The Ute strode past Doerr in the first set earning a 6-2 win. In the second set, the Cougar mustered up some more energy to push Kwok a little harder. Doerr took the lead 2-1, but Kwok answered back winning two straight games. The Ute only allowed Doerr two more games before shutting her down 6-2, 6-4. Kwok ends the regular season with a 15-11 singles record.
The Utes were off and running with a 3-0 lead as the crowd gathered around Walsh's court. At the No. 4 spot, Walsh took on Ezhova from the Cougars. The Ute came out with a lot of energy on Saturday. Walsh only allowed a single game by Ezhova as she dominated the court 6-1 in the first set. The Ute continued battling and defending her home court against the Cougar. The Ute had a solid lead 5-3, and at match point, Ezhova double faulted to give Walsh the win 6-1, 6-3 and Utah the overall match win with a 4-0 lead.
The bottom of the lineup finished out strong on Saturday with Maughan pulling out a big win at the No. 6 spot. The Ute took on Carney from the Cougars. Carney had a strong 3-0 lead in the first set, but Maughan battle hard to come back. The Ute only allowed Carney one more game before taking the win 6-4. In the second set, Maughan came out stronger to only allow two games to slip through her fingers to earn a solid 6-4, 6-2 victory.
At the No. 3 spot, Monson fought with everything she had against Hayasaka. The Ute took the lead early into the first set and only allowed two games to the Cougar. In the second set, Hayasaka changed her game plan to answer back with a 6-3 win. The two played a third set, with the Ute battling harder than ever trying to aide her team into a 7-0 sweep over BYU. Hayasaka was on Monson's heels trying to overpower her, but the Ute was too strong for the Cougar. Monson earned a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win to give Utah a 6-0 lead over the Cougars.
The last match to finish up was between 54th ranked Ferris and 63rd ranked Surkova at No. 1 singles. Ferris controlled the first set right from the start to earn a powerful 6-2 win. In the second set, the Cougar came back with a fierce 5-2 lead. The Ute tried to come back, but was unable to overpower Surkova. The Cougar took the second set 6-4 over Ferris.
In the tie breaker, the Ute and Cougar fought their hearts out. Surkova took the lead 7-5, but double faulted, giving Ferris a chance to take the lead. After Ferris' next serve, the two rallied for a short time before Surkova hit a ball just barely over the net that Ferris was unable to get to in enough time. The Cougar maintained her lead 8-6. Surkova earned another game, but double faulted once again. With Surkova up 9-7, she served a powerful ball that Ferris was unable to return. The Cougar took the win 2-6, 6-4 (10-7). Ferris finishes out the regular season with a 29-11 singles record.
With today's win over the Cougars, Utah earns a fourth place Mountain West Conference tie with BYU as the regular season came to an end on Saturday. The Utes will head to Fort Worth, Texas for the MWC Tournament beginning April 24, 2008.
