SALT LAKE CITY - Kalee Whipple and Morgan Warburton combined for 58 points as the Utah women's basketball team defeated Southern California, 87-77.
Whipple scored a career-best 31 points before fouling out in the final minute, while Warburton also had a career-high with 27 points, including a team-best nine rebounds. Warburton was 16-of-16 from the charity stripe.
The hard-fought game saw 13 lead changes and nine ties. The momentum began to swing Utah's way late in the second half. With the score tied at 62-62 with eight minutes remaining, the Utes went on a 9-0 run to pull ahead, 71-63 with 5:32 left in the game. It was a lead that they would not relinquish.
Although USC would come within three points in the final stretch of the game, free-throw shooting enabled Utah to pull ahead late. The final key run came with under two minutes remaining. Up 75-72, Warburton, Whipple and Hannah Stephens each made a pair of free-throws from the line to take a nine-point lead they would not relinquish, as the two teams traded free-throws down the stretch.
Points from the charity stripe were a large factor for both teams, as Utah was 34-of-37 from the line and the Trojans were 28-of-34.
The Trojans were led by Brynn Cameron's 16 points, including 3-of-9 from three-point range and 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. Nadia Parker had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
