SALT LAKE CITY - Senior Morgan Warburton scored 21 points while senior Katie King recorded a double-double to lead the Utah women's basketball team to a 94-64 win over Southern Oregon on Saturday, Nov. 8 in the Huntsman Center in a preseason exhibition game.
Utah trailed only once early in the game and quickly pulled away midway through the first half. Its largest lead of the game was 37 points.
"We dominated but we have areas where we need to make improvements," head coach Elaine Elliott said. "We got to go against a different type of pressure and we adjusted pretty well to that. We ran some man and zone defense. I wasn't very happy with our first half. We were not the team that played the hardest. Giving up 13 offensive boards was very disturbing and we corrected that in the second half."
King tallied 18 points and 10 rebounds for her double-double. Junior Kalee Whipple had 14 points with nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Junior Halie Sawyer was also in double digit points with 14, including nine rebounds and four blocks. Warburton was 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
"Katie really played tough," Elliott said. "She was the one player that I thought played with a high level of intensity from the start."
The contest marked the debut for freshmen point guards Hannah Stephens and Janita Badon. Stephens, who started the game, recorded 14 points with three assists and a steal, while Badon had five assists, four steals and four points. Freshman center Mandy Munns also added five points in her 12 minutes.
"I thought our point guards played very well," Elliott said. "They defended well and had eight assists between them and only three turnovers."
Southern Oregon, which is ranked No. 19 in the NAIA, was led by Jacki Speer's 19 points.
Utah opens its regular season on Monday, Nov. 17 against Jackson State in the Huntsman Center, beginning at 7:30 pm.
