Women's Basketball Tallies Eighth Straight Win

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team (13-3 overall, 2-0 Mountain West) shot a swift 55.8 percent as it held the pesky San Diego State Aztecs at bay for its eighth straight win here tonight, 74-62.
The loss drops SDSU to 9-6 on the year, and to 0-3 in loop action.
The Utes surrendered the first bucket of the game to the Aztecs, but that was the only time Utah would trail for the rest of the contest. The Utes went on an 11-4 run at that point as it claimed the 11-6 lead. They would never look back from that point.
Even though it shot 50 percent (13-for-26) in the first half, Utah's lead only swelled to as many as eight points, 20-12, with 9:59 left in the frame. SDSU never rolled over as it managed to trim any surmountable Utah lead down to one possession. Utah's eight-point cushion shrunk to two, 26-24, with 3:34 left in the half. However, the home team finished the first stanza with an 8-0 run, and it headed into halftime having claimed its first double-digit lead of the game, 34-24.
Morgan Warburton scored 14 of her team-high 23 points in the first half. For the game, She shot 7-of-12 from the floor in tallying her season-best effort. With her 23 points, Warburton records her 1,005th career point, becoming the 20th 1,000-point scorer at Utah.
The Aztecs came out of the break to engineer a 7-2 run. It trimmed Utah's 10-point halftime lead into seven points, 38-31, with 16:49 left. But, that's as close as the visitors would ever get. An 11-2 spurt for the Utes extended their lead to 16 points, 49-33, with 13 minutes left. Their biggest lead of the game came soon after that point as the Utes would eventually own the 17-point, 54-37, cushion.
SDSU would get as close as nine points several time down the stretch. The last such lead came at the 56 second mark, 70-61. But, the Aztecs didn't have enough in the tank and Utah ended it with the 12-point victory.
Leilani Mitchell was nearly equal to Warburton's effort on the floor. The senior point guard tallied 19 points on 5-for-12 shooting. Mitchell also went 9-for-12 from the line and dished out a game-high-tying five assists.
Kalee Whipple nearly had a double-double tonight, tallying 14 points and a game-high nine boards. She too had five assists.
The Utes held SDSU to a meager 39.3 percent (22-for-56) shooting, and it was push under the glass. Both teams collected 31 caroms on the night. Whipple led all rebounders, and Jessica Perry helped out with four boards of her own.
Jene Morris led the Aztecs with a game-high 25 points, connecting on 10-of-18 attempts. She also led all Aztecs with five boards.
The Deseret First Dual returns to the spotlight when the Utes venture down south to battle its rival, Brigham Young, on Saturday. Tipoff in the Marriott Center is set for 7 p.m.
