SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah junior Adele Letro (Davis, Calif.) scored in the 24th minute Thursday night against Cal Poly. That was all sophomore goalkeeper Lynzee Lee (Kalispell, Mont.) and the Ute defense would need to top the Mustangs at Ute Field. But just to be sure, Letro scored again with just 16 seconds remaining in the contest, giving Utah a 2-0 victory.
Letro's goals were her seventh and eighth of the season - in just seven games. On her first half goal, Letro was the beneficiary of a beautiful through pass from sophomore Kelly Isleib (Park City, Utah). Letro was able to sneak her shot between the keeper and the left post. Isleib recorded her seventh assist in as many games on the goal, which gave the Utes a 1-0 lead.
"Kelly makes it so easy for us," Letro said.
Utah dominated the first half, getting five shots off in the first five minutes. The Utes out-shot Cal Poly 8-3 in the first 45 minutes, but were only able to find the back of the net once.
"We needed to finish our possessions a little better early on," Utah head coach Rich Manning said. "Once we figured out how Cal Poly played we seemed to find our rhythm and create opportunities."
Utah continued to apply pressure in the second half. The Utes racked up 13 second-half shots and ended up with a 21-7 advantage for the contest. That pressure finally gave way to Letro's goal to ice it in the 90th minute.
Ute freshman Nicole Cardon (Lehi, Utah) cleared a ball as Cal Poly tried to make one last push for the equalizer. Cardon found Letro, who controlled the ball on the left sideline and got behind the defense. Letro went one-on-one with Mustang goalkeeper Alli Tramel and put the ball in the right corner from 10 yards away.
"We controlled the ball well tonight," Letro said. "There were a couple of rough times but we hung in there and got a good win."
Utah picked up its second consecutive 2-0 shutout victory.
"I'm very proud of our defense after notching another great shutout," Manning said.
The Utes will be in action again Saturday night, hosting Washington in a 7:30 p.m. match at Ute Field.
