Iandolo Named Ute Women's Tennis Coach

SALT LAKE CITY - Mat Iandolo has been named as the new head women's tennis coach at the University of Utah. Associate Athletic Director Pete Oliszczak made the announcement Thursday morning.
"We had an excellent pool of candidates for this position," Oliszczak said. "We're very excited to have Mat on board as our new women's tennis coach."
Iandolo (pronounced ee-ON-duh-lo) comes to Utah after 16 years as the head women's tennis coach at Purdue University. In his time with the Boilermakers, Iandolo took a team that had finished no higher than sixth in the Big Ten since 1983 and turned it into a national contender.
Iandolo's Purdue squads advanced to the NCAA Tournament in five of the last 12 seasons, including two of the last five. He has also had two singles qualifiers and three doubles teams advance to the NCAA Tournament. Iandolo is the winningest coach in Boilermaker women's tennis history and was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2003.
During his time at Purdue, Iandolo coached 12 First-Team All-Big Ten selections. His team earned 57 Academic All-Big Ten honors, more than double the total of any other Big Ten school during that span.
Iandolo also has coaching experience at the University of Kentucky, where he was the assistant women's tennis coach in 1990 and 1991. He was the head tennis professional at Four Lakes Athletic Club in Lisle, Ill. from 1988-1990. He has also had stints as an assistant coach at UCLA, the University of California, San Diego State and Weber State. Iandolo is currently an NCAA Regional Committee member. He was also an ITA Regional Committee Member from 1995-99.
A graduate of Weber State University, Iandolo earned his bachelor's degree in psychology in 1983. He was a three-year starter on the Wildcats' men's tennis team, playing on two conference championship teams and serving as team captain in 1982.
"Having gone to Weber State and played tennis there, I always looked up to the University of Utah, the legendary (former men's coach) Harry James and the great program they had there," Iandolo said. "Ever since I first saw Utah play, it stood out in my mind as a place I wanted to be. I really am excited about building a women's program that could match the level of success they had in those days."
Iandolo replaces Megan Dorney, who spent five seasons at the helm. Dorney resigned to join her husband C.J., who will be attending dental school out of state. Iandolo will be the fifth head coach of the Utah women's tennis program.
