SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team played an emotional match on Wednesday against Weber State. The Utes dedicated their 7-0 winning match to head coach Megan Dorny's sister-in-law, Michelle Williams and her family. The family recently passed away due to a car accident, and the girls decided to play in remembrance of the family and all of the support that they showed for the team at all of their home matches.
After having a moment of silence, the team handed out remembrance ribbons for the fans and friends that had come to support the team and Coach Dorny during this hard time. It was a touching moment between the girls and Dorny before competition got underway.
Utah's doubles teams stepped onto the courts ready to battle during the afternoon match against Weber State. Elizabeth Ferris and Leigh Walsh stepped in at the No. 1 slot to face Inalise Pienaar and Gabi Venditto from the Wildcats. The Utes fought for an 8-3 win over the Wildcats to aid in the earning of the doubles point for Utah.
Utah continued their momentum in singles play, beginning with No. 67 Ferris. The Ute led the Utes against Inalise Pienaar for a 6-1, 6-0 victory to edge the Utes to 2-0. Next to finish up was freshman Andrea Maughan at the No. 5 slot. The Ute faced Elsie Beneke from the Wildcats for a striking 6-1, 6-0 victory to put under her belt.
Walsh, a sophomore, played at the No. 3 slot on Wednesday against Ashley Schapper. The Ute treaded past the Wildcat for a 6-2, 6-3 win. Emily Kwok represented the Utes at the No. 2 slot. Facing Gabi Venditto from the Wildcats, the Ute pushed through for a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Utah was 5-0 for the match with Cheyenne Reveche and Jessica Carter still battling on the courts. Playing at the No. 4 slot, Reveche fought for a 6-2, 6-4 win over Grayce Farias from the Wildcats. Finishing up for the Utes was Carter, a freshman. Playing at the No. 6 slot, the Ute was challenged by Keya Adamson from Weber State. After skimming by with a 7-5 win in the first set, Carter dug deep to pull out a 7-5, 6-3 win over Adamson.
After Wednesday's winning match against the Weber State Wildcats, the University of Utah women's tennis team is now 4-2 for the season as they hit the road this weekend to face Kansas State and the University of Kansas.
