SALT LAKE CITY - All eight Utah players scored and the team shot 52 percent from the floor as the University of Utah women's basketball team downed the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks here in an exhibition game this evening, 78-32.
"It's important for us to get out and see some competition other than our own team. Games like this help on film and are important for us to improve," said head coach Elaine Elliott.
"I thought we lacked intensity in the first half, but really stepped up on defense in the second half and looked a lot better."
Utah completes exhibition play, 2-0, and now it waits for the season opener with UC Irvine set for Nov. 15. Tipoff in the Huntsman Center is set for 7 p.m.
The Utes, who shot 51.8 percent (29-for-56), held FLC to just 10 field goals and to 27 percent (10-for-37) shooting. Utah also held the 30-27 edge in rebounds.
The Utes saw six of their players score in double figures tonight, paced by the 17-point effort of Kalee Whipple. She went 6-for-9 from the floor and was 3-for-5 from three-point range.
The team's top shooter this evening was Jessica Perry. She poured in 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting, and added six boards and four steals to her effort. Senior point guard Leilani Mitchell had another impressive night, tallying her second double-double in as many games. She tallied 10 points and dished out 11 assists. Mitchell also had six steals and three boards, committing only three turnovers.
Morgan Warburton posted 12 points in going 4-for-9 from the floor and Hennasea Tokumura came off the bench to record 11 points. She was 4-for-6 from the field, which included a 3-for-4 night from behind the arc.
Katie King proved solid in the middle. She tallied 10 points and led all rebounders with eight caroms.
The Utes raced out to a 9-0 lead on the Skyhawks in the first two minutes play. However, the visitors managed to cut the deficit to four, 9-5, with 17:13 on the clock. That was as close as the Skyhawks would get for the rest of the game.
Utah managed to push its lead up to seven, 16-9 with 13:40 left, and double it to 14 points (23-9), thanks to a 7-0 run sandwiched around a Whipple layup and three-pointer.
With 9:42 to go in the first frame, Utah held the 29-11 lead, and both teams went scoreless for almost seven minutes. Whipple snapped the dry spell with a three, and it put Utah up 31-11 with two minutes to go in the half.
The final mintues of the half saw FLC sandwich a pair of threes around King's layup as Utah held the 33-17 cushion at the break.
Utah put it away to start the second half as it came out of the break to go on a 30-point run. The home team held FLC scoreless for the first 11:26 of the second half.
All of the sudden, Utah's halftime lead of 16 points swelled to 63-17. Mitchell's steal and layup got the run started in the first minute of the second half, but it was the six-point output of both Perry and Whipple that buoyed the run.
The home team's lead was as much as 51 points (78-27 with 2:51 left in the game) in the second half, as the Utes shot a cool 60 percent (18-for-30) from the floor. However, the lead settled on 46 by game's end.
